On LG freestanding coil-top ranges each burner has its own receptacle block, wired to the harness by screw terminals or push-on connectors depending on the model year. A loose or carbon-fouled contact is what causes the intermittent heat and sparking.
Before You Start#
- Tools: a Phillips #2, a 1/4-inch nut driver, needle-nose pliers, a non-contact voltage tester, and a wire stripper if needed.
- Part: an LG burner receptacle block for your element size; most LG coil-tops take a standard-size block, but confirm the terminal spacing and connection type against your old one.
- Time and level: 25-35 minutes, intermediate.
- Safety: unplug the range or cut the 240V breaker, then confirm it is dead with the non-contact tester — 240V shock can be fatal.

Replacing the Receptacle#
- Pull the element from the receptacle and lift out the drip pan so the block shows through the well.
- Lift the cooktop: grip the front edge between the elements and raise it, removing the two front-corner screws first on models that have them, until the prop holds it open.
- Photograph the block's wiring from a few angles, noting the two power wires, their colours and terminals, plus any ground wire on the bracket.
- Free the wires — loosen screw terminals, or pull spade connectors off by the connector — and trim back any insulation blackened by heat, stripping half an inch of fresh copper.
- Remove the one or two mounting screws, slide the old block out, and note the terminal-slot orientation the element prongs plug into.
- Mount the new block in the same orientation so the slots line up with the well above, then reconnect each wire tightly (a loose contact is the main cause of arcing) and reattach any ground wire.
- Lower the cooktop, refit the pan and element, restore power, and run the burner on HIGH for 5 minutes — it should heat evenly with no spark, buzz or smell, and the block should stay cool underneath.
Troubleshooting#
- Still no heat with a new block: the burner control switch may have failed — move the element to a working position to confirm.
- Sparking at the new block: the element prongs are corroded or pitted — clean them with fine sandpaper, or replace the element if they are deeply pitted.
- Block gets hot in use: a terminal is loose — cut power and retighten, since a warm block means resistance at the connection.
