How to Replace KitchenAid Oven Lower Bake Element

KitchenAid ovens use a standard tubular bake element bolted to two screw terminals at the lower rear wall, on the Whirlpool platform (common parts W10308477 and WPW10308477). Before you order, rule out the sensor: in Even-Heat True Convection mode the rear bow-tie element does the work, so food underdone only in convection is not a bake-element problem.

- Tools: a Torx T20 driver, a 1/4" nut driver, a Phillips #2, and work gloves — element edges are sharp.
- Part: the bake element for your model, cross-referenced to the Whirlpool number; common ones are W10308477 and WPW10308477.
- Time and level: 20-35 minutes, intermediate.
- Safety: cut the breaker. The terminals carry 240V when live, and even with the oven off they stay wired to the control-board relay — only a tripped breaker guarantees zero voltage.

Replacing the Bake Element#
- Confirm the failure first: set BAKE to 350°F, and after 5 minutes look for an even orange glow along the bottom element. No glow, dark patches, a burn-through hole, or arcing all mean replace it.
- Cut power, pull the racks, and lift out the bottom floor panel if your model has a concealed element (two to four screws at the rear).
- Remove the two Torx T20 or 1/4" hex screws holding the element flange to the rear wall, and draw the element forward about four to five inches to expose the terminals.
- Pull each 1/4" spade connector straight off — the two terminals are interchangeable, each carrying one leg of the 240V circuit — photographing them if you like.
- Push the wires firmly onto the new element's terminals, feed them back through the wall, and align the flange to the screw holes.
- Tighten the mounting screws without crushing the thin wall, and confirm the element rests on its brackets without touching the cavity walls.
- Refit the panel and racks, restore power, and set BAKE 350°F — the element should glow evenly within 60-90 seconds. Run it empty for 15 minutes to burn off manufacturing oils.
Troubleshooting#
- Element cycles off and will not return: the temperature sensor is reading falsely high and cutting the relay — that is a sensor issue, not the new element.
- Heats in BAKE but not BROIL: normal, since those are separate elements on separate circuits.
- Code F3E0 after the job: the sensor circuit is open; you likely nudged the thin sensor probe at the upper rear — inspect it.
- Heavy smoke on first use: old food residue heating more efficiently — run an AquaLift clean, adding water for the low-temperature cycle.
