The receptacle is a ceramic or high-temperature-plastic housing with two spring contacts, mounted behind each drip pan opening. KitchenAid uses the same block as Whirlpool coil-tops, so the wiring and mounting are identical — the common part is the WP330031 standard two-wire block. Arcing from a loose connection tends to burn the receptacle and the element prongs together, so inspect both.
Before You Start#
- Tools: a Phillips #2, a 1/4" nut driver, needle-nose pliers, and wire strippers if the terminal ends are melted.
- Part: a burner receptacle block matching your prong style (the WP330031 is the standard two-wire type), plus new 1/4" spade terminals if the old ones are burned.
- Time and level: 20-30 minutes per receptacle, intermediate.
- Safety: cut the breaker, then confirm it is dead by turning the burner to HIGH — nothing should happen. The wires behind the block carry 240V when live.

Replacing the Receptacle#
- Lift the element out (pull toward you to unplug), then remove the drip pan and trim ring to expose the block at the rear of the pan opening.
- Most KitchenAid blocks come out from above; if it is tight, release the two front cooktop clips and prop the top up on its support rod.
- Photograph the two wires — both carry line voltage, L1 and L2 of the 240V circuit — noting which lands on which terminal, since one is often offset.
- Pull each connector off by its metal body; if it is fused on, cut the wire behind it and crimp a fresh 1/4" spade terminal.
- Remove the single mounting screw and slide the old block out; replace it if the contacts are blackened, pitted or the housing is melted, since it cannot be cleaned and reused.
- Check the wire is intact 12-gauge (trim back any insulation melted more than half an inch), mount the new block facing forward, and push each wire fully on until it resists a tug.
- Refit the pan and element, restore power, and run the burner on HIGH for 5 minutes — it should glow evenly with no sparking or smell, and the prongs should stay clean.
Troubleshooting#
- Still sparking at the plug: the element prongs are pitted or bent — replace the element too, or damaged prongs will quickly destroy the new block.
- Breaker trips on HIGH: a wire is shorted between the infinite switch and the block — inspect the run for bare or pinched insulation with power off.
- New block will not line up: the mounting position shifted between model years — use the old bracket as your guide.
