How to Replace KitchenAid Range Drip Pans

KitchenAid coil-tops use standard Whirlpool-family element sizes and pan dimensions. The elements are plug-in: two prongs slide into a receptacle block, much like a plug in an outlet, so there is no wiring or screws for the swap itself. KitchenAid's heavier chrome pans have higher sides than basic models for better spill containment.

Before You Start#

• Tools: none for the element and pan swap; a Phillips #2 only if you also replace the receptacle block beneath.
• Parts: a drip-pan set (two 6-inch and two 8-inch chrome pans) plus any replacement elements — typically a 1500W 6-inch and a 2100W 8-inch, with some ranges carrying a 3000W dual-circuit power burner.
• Time and level: 10-15 minutes, beginner (no tools, no electrical knowledge).
• Safety: turn every burner off and let the elements cool for 15 minutes — never pull a hot coil. There is no need to cut power for a simple pan-and-element swap, since the elements unplug by hand.

Swapping Pans and Elements#

1. Lift each element about an inch at the outer edge and pull it straight toward you — the prongs slide out with roughly five pounds of pull, so do not yank and bend them.
2. Lift the old drip pan straight out of its stamped pocket (and the trim ring on top, if your model has one) — nothing clips or screws it in.
3. Wipe the exposed cooktop under the pans, and inspect each receptacle block for blackened contacts or melted plastic; a damaged block should be replaced before the new element goes in.
4. Drop each new chrome pan into the matching recess — 6-inch pans in the small wells, 8-inch in the large — with the element opening facing the rear block.
5. Hold the element prongs to the block and push straight in until the base sits flush, then lower the coil so it rests level in the pan.
6. Turn each burner to HIGH one at a time; it should glow evenly within 15-30 seconds, then dim uniformly on LOW.

Matching the Parts#

• Chrome vs porcelain: KitchenAid ships chrome, which reflects heat upward but shows stains; black porcelain hides stains but absorbs heat. Match what came with your range.
• Wattage: match the stamp — usually 1500W for a 6-inch and 2100W for an 8-inch. A mismatch heats slowly or overdraws the receptacle.
• Power burner: a 3000W dual-circuit position uses four prongs, not two — never fit a standard two-prong element there.
