Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Unplug and reach the rear#
Unplug the dryer from the 240V outlet, pull the unit clear of the wall, and disconnect the exhaust duct from the rear vent port so you have clean working space behind the dryer.
Step 2 — Remove the rear access panel#
The rear access panel is held by 6-8 Phillips screws around its perimeter — some models use a full rear panel, others a smaller lower panel over just the element area. Back out every perimeter screw, lift the panel away, and keep the screws together.
Step 3 — Locate the element housing#
The element housing is a metal enclosure tied into the exhaust duct at the rear, usually at the lower-center or lower-right of the bulkhead. You will see two wire terminals at the element connections, with the can held by one or two mounting screws.
Step 4 — Test the element before removing it#
Set your multimeter to ohms and disconnect one wire terminal from the element (pull the connector with needle-nose pliers, not the wire). Touch the probes to both element terminals: a good element reads 10-50 ohms, while an open circuit (OL/infinity) confirms it is burned out. Then test each terminal to the metal housing — that ground test should read OL/infinity, and any continuity between a terminal and the housing means the element has grounded out, a dangerous condition that needs immediate replacement.
Step 5 — Disconnect the wiring#
Label or photograph every wire connection before removal, then disconnect both element terminals. If the high-limit thermostat or thermal fuse mounts on the element housing, disconnect those wires too, labeling each position.
Step 6 — Remove the element housing#
Take out the mounting screw(s) holding the housing to the rear bulkhead — usually one or two 5/16-inch hex-head screws on GE dryers. The housing may also clip or friction-fit to the exhaust duct, so slide the whole assembly out carefully.
Step 7 — Transfer the thermostats (if needed)#
If the high-limit thermostat and thermal fuse mount on the old housing, unscrew them and transfer them to the new one. Some new element assemblies come with these included — in that case, discard the old ones.
Step 8 — Install the new element#
Slide the new housing into position on the rear bulkhead, align it with the exhaust duct connection, and secure it with the mounting screw(s). Reconnect all wire terminals to their original positions using your reference photo; each should push on firmly with a slight click.
Step 9 — Verify connections and reassemble#
Double-check that every terminal is fully seated and no bare wire is exposed or touching the housing. Reinstall the rear access panel with all its screws, reconnect the exhaust duct, and push the dryer back into place.
Step 10 — Test the repair#
Plug in the dryer and run a timed heat cycle for 5-10 minutes, feeling the exhaust air at the vent to confirm heat, and check that it reaches temperature within 3-5 minutes. On GE Profile models with SmartHQ, verify no error codes are stored.
