Why the receptacle burns out#

The receptacle holds two spring contacts that clamp the element prongs and feed the coil. Over many heat-and-cool cycles those springs lose tension; a loose contact adds resistance, resistance makes heat, and the heat softens the springs further — a runaway loop that ends in a melted block. So a burnt receptacle is usually the symptom of a loose fit, which is why you check the element prongs at the same time.

Safety warning: Turn off the circuit breaker for the range (240V circuit, typically a double-pole 40A or 50A breaker). Verify power is off by turning a burner to HIGH and confirming it does not heat. Working on a live 240V receptacle can cause severe burns or electrocution. Never work on this component with power connected.

Step by step#

1 - Cut power and lift the element. Trip the range breaker, then confirm it is dead by turning a burner to HIGH and feeling for no heat. Pull the coil straight out of the failed socket and check its prongs — pitted, thinned or discoloured prongs cause repeat failures, so plan to replace a worn element too.

2 - Raise the cooktop. Frigidaire coil tops hinge upward like a car hood. Remove the two Phillips screws at the front edge (some models use clips) and prop the top open on its support rod, or with a sturdy brace if there is none.

3 - Find the failed receptacle. One block sits under each burner opening. The bad one shows burn marks, melted housing, blackened terminals or splayed spring contacts. It is held to the cooktop underside by a screw or small bracket, with two spade wires on the back.

4 - Disconnect and remove it. Photograph the wiring — one lead lands on L1 and one on L2, each carrying 120 volts for 240 volts total. Pull each spade off by the connector, never the wire, back out the mounting screw, and slide the receptacle out of the opening.

5 - Check the wire terminals. Inspect the spade connectors: if any is melted, corroded or no longer grips, cut it off, strip the lead, and crimp on a fresh high-temperature spade — the ceramic or fibreglass-insulated type, not standard vinyl.

6 - Fit the new receptacle. Mount it with the original screw, press each spade firmly onto its terminal until it will not tug free, and route the leads exactly as before so nothing is pinched against a sharp edge.

7 - Reassemble and test. Lower the cooktop, refit the front screws, and push the coil back in until it seats level on the drip-pan ring. Restore power, run the burner on HIGH, and watch the first minute — any crackle or burning smell means power off and re-seat.

If the burner still misbehaves#

• No heat at all: confirm both breaker poles are on and check for 240 volts at the receptacle terminals; if there is none, trace back to the infinite switch.
• Only half the coil glows: one lead is loose or one breaker pole tripped — check both connections and both poles.
• The new socket runs warm: mild warmth is normal, but too-hot-to-touch means the prongs are not fully seated. Re-seat the element.
• A burning smell that lingers past a few uses points to heat-damaged wire insulation that needs replacing.

When to call a professional#

Bring in a technician if several receptacles failed at once (a wiring or voltage problem), if the wiring behind the socket is badly heat-damaged, if working with 240 volt circuits is outside your comfort zone, or if the cooktop is a slide-in style that does not lift and needs rear-panel access instead.
