How to Replace Frigidaire Dryer Support Rollers

Unlike a squeal, which usually means the idler or a glide, a heavy thump or grinding rumble is the sound of flat-spotted or seized support rollers. The drum rests its weight on these wheels; as their bearings wear, they develop flats and the drum drops onto them once per rotation. Left alone, a seized roller can score its shaft and eventually let the drum sag into the heater or blower, so the noise is worth chasing early.

Diagnosing dryer noise is mostly a matter of matching the sound to the part. A rhythmic thump that keeps time with the drum is the classic flat-roller signature; a continuous squeal that rises with speed is the idler or a dried-out glide; and a rattle that comes and goes is usually something loose inside the drum or a coin trapped in the lint path. Sorting the noise before you order anything keeps you from swapping good rollers to chase a squeal that actually lives somewhere else.

Tools and parts#

Keep a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a 1/4-inch nut driver, a multimeter, a flashlight, and a vacuum on hand. Parts depend on the diagnosis — the rollers themselves for a thumping drum, but confirm the noise source before ordering.

Safety#

Unplug the dryer completely. For gas models, also shut off the gas supply valve. Wait 5 minutes before touching element wiring.

Steps#

1. Safety and access. With the dryer unplugged, open the cabinet — front or top panel depending on the model — so you can reach the drum and the rollers at the rear bulkhead. Vacuum out the lint that will be waiting in there.
2. Identify the failed component. Spin the drum by hand with the belt off and listen; a roller with a flat spot clunks once per turn, and a seized roller drags or squeals. Wobble each roller on its shaft to feel for play, and inspect the shafts for grooving.
3. Remove the failed component. Slip the belt off the drum and motor pulley, lift the drum out of the cabinet, then pull the retaining clip or nut holding each worn roller and slide it off its shaft.
4. Install the replacement. Wipe the shaft clean, fit the new roller with any washer in the same order, and secure the clip; spin it by hand to confirm it turns smooth and true with no wobble.
5. Reassemble and test. Set the drum back onto the rollers, route the belt around the drum and under the idler to the motor pulley in its original path, rotate the drum a full turn to seat the belt, then rebuild the cabinet.
6. Verify complete operation. Plug in and run a short cycle; the drum should turn quietly and evenly. Any remaining thump means a roller was missed or the belt is off-track. Let it run with the cabinet closed for a few minutes rather than a quick pulse, since a flat spot can stay quiet cold and only speak up once the drum warms and the bearing takes load.

When to call a pro#

If new rollers do not quiet the dryer, the noise may be a worn idler, a bad rear bearing, or the blower wheel, which are deeper checks. A burning smell or a drum that still drags after new rollers warrants stopping and getting a professional look before running it further.
