Read the first failure as a message#

A thermal fuse is not a wear item in the usual sense. It is a one-shot safety device that opens when the dryer runs hotter than design, and the usual reason a dryer runs hot is that the air cannot leave. So when the failure calendar puts a thermal fuse at 3-5 years, it is not really telling you the fuse is fragile — it is telling you which houses have restricted vents.

That matters because the same restriction that opens a fuse at 3-5 years goes on cooking the heating element until it fails at 7-10. Replace the fuse without clearing the duct and you have bought a few months, not a repair.

The failure calendar#

Nothing on that list is rated worse than common, and the motor only shows up at the very end of the expected life. That is the shape behind the above-average rating, which itself rests on service call frequency data from industry sources including Yale Appliance's 33,190 service call dataset, Consumer Reports surveys and aggregated repair shop data — measured as service rate, the share of units needing repair within the first 3-5 years.

The three maintenance items#

• Lint filter, every load. A partly covered screen restricts airflow on the very next cycle, not eventually.
• Vent cleaning, annually. This is the one the guidance singles out as extending element life, and given a heating element sits in the calendar at 7-10 years, an hour a year is a good trade.

Deciding at each age#

• 0-3 years — always repair, and check the warranty first.
• 3-8 years — usually repair. Single-component failures are worth fixing if the cost stays under 50% of replacement price.
• 8-11 years — evaluate carefully. A simple fix within budget is fine; multiple failures or a major component favour replacement.
• 11+ years — usually replace. Beyond typical lifespan, major repairs rarely pay, and newer models are more efficient.

The 50% rule is the thread through all four: repair costs above half the price of a comparable new Whirlpool dryer generally mean replacement is the better investment. Replace at 11-15 years old, when a repair crosses that line, or when the machine asks for a third major repair.

What quietly costs you years#

Beyond the vent, the usual suspects: a crushed or over-long vent hose behind the machine, an exterior hood blocked with lint, and overloading, which makes the drum tumble badly and works the belt and motor harder on every cycle.
