The short version#

What we replace on a GE#

The control board leads by a wide margin. It runs compressor cycling, defrost timing, the fans and the display, and on Profile and Cafe it carries the smart features too — so one soaked board takes out everything at once. The soaking usually arrives from an ice maker leaking directly above it.

Ice makers come second, and three faults cover most visits: the inlet valve never fills the mold, the mold heater will not release finished cubes, or the harvest motor stops cycling. GE Profile uses a different harvest mechanism than the add-on kits, so those parts do not swap.

Behind those: display panels on Profile and Cafe going blank, flickering or dead to the touch (that board is separate from the main one, and corrosion creeps in from the door gasket area), water inlet valves around the 5-7 year mark — a weakening solenoid means slow ice and a limp dispenser, while one stuck open floods the floor — and temperature drift traced to a lazy thermistor or a jammed air damper.

What we replace on an LG#

Compressors, though almost entirely on pre-2020 units. The piston connecting rod wears, knocking starts, cooling fades. LG stretched that compressor warranty to 10 years on the affected models, and newer builds simply do not show the pattern.

Frozen ice makers are the everyday call. Water drips between fill cycles and builds in layers until nothing drops; suspect the fill valve, a dead fill-tube heater, or a compartment running colder than it should. Boards do fail here too, normally after a surge or a leak, but InstaView keeps its display electronics on their own board, which keeps that particular repair small.

Two more arrive with age: an evaporator fan bearing that buzzes or squeals and falls silent the second the freezer door opens (rear panel, inside the freezer), and door gaskets that surrender their grip after years of food oils and temperature swings. Cost and the verdict#

Neither brand is punishing to own. LG is typically the cheaper of the two per visit, and across a 10-15 year life with 2-4 service calls that gap stays modest. When something big does let go, run the 50% rule: once the quote passes half the price of a comparable new unit, put the money toward replacement. Routine coil and gasket care adds 20-30% to either brand's service life.

Pick LG for quiet, efficient cooling backed by the compressor warranty. Pick GE when you want the tier range — base models are the rock-solid ones, while Profile and Cafe buy features at the price of extra failure points.
