Two different bets#

Frigidaire sells simplicity. Fewer electronics means fewer things able to fail, EvenTemp keeps the compartments steady, and when something does break the repair is straightforward and the part is cheap. Expect 12-16 years.

LG sells engineering. The linear compressor carries a 10-year warranty, InstaView Door-in-Door lets you look without dumping cold air onto the kitchen floor, Craft Ice makes spherical cubes, and Smart Diagnosis lets a technician read the machine through a phone. Expect 14-17 years, and the post-2020 compressor is the most efficient one sold to consumers.

The Frigidaire failure most owners meet#

Defrost. Every Frigidaire runs an automatic defrost cycle built from a heater, a thermostat, and either a timer or an adaptive defrost board. Let any one of those quit and frost sheets over the evaporator coils, airflow chokes, and the fresh-food side slowly warms while the compressor runs and runs. The heater itself is the usual culprit.

The rest of the list is short and mechanical. Temperature control problems trace back to a faulty thermistor, a damper stuck between compartments, or a main board misreading its own sensors. Door gaskets lose magnetic grip and let humid air in, which loads the compressor and grows more frost — again, the dollar-bill test tells you in a minute. Control boards die mostly from water, typically an ice maker dripping onto them. And a worn evaporator fan bearing buzzes or grinds until you open the freezer door and it stops.

The LG failure most owners meet#

Ice. LG ice makers freeze up when the fill tube, the water inlet valve, or the ice maker assembly starts misbehaving; water drips, freezes in layers, and production stops. A working fill-tube heater is what normally prevents it, so that is the first thing to test.

The pre-2020 linear compressor is the other name in the file. Those piston connecting rods wore early, which produced knocking and a slow loss of cooling — the reason LG extended compressor coverage to 10 years on the affected units. Boards fail after surges and leaks, and on InstaView the display electronics sit on a separate board. Evaporator fan motors go noisy the same way Frigidaire's do, and French door center seals wear fastest because both doors have to meet precisely.

Which one belongs in your kitchen#

Buy Frigidaire when the purchase price is the constraint, when you want a fridge with very little to go wrong, or when you would rather pay less at every service call — it is typically cheaper per repair, and over a 10-15 year life with 2-4 calls that adds up. The Gallery line is the sweet spot.

Buy LG when you want the quiet, efficient compressor, the door-in-door convenience and the longer expected life, and you accept a higher bill on the rare repair.
