GE Refrigerator DE: Adaptive Defrost Failed — Evaporator Icing Over
DE means the defrost system did not bring evaporator coils to target temperature (45-55F) within the allowed heater runtime. Frost is building up on the evaporator, progressively blocking airflow and degrading cooling.
GE Adaptive Defrost Logic
GE Profile and Cafe models use adaptive scheduling — the board tracks compressor runtime and door openings to predict frost accumulation. Defrost runs only when needed, not on a fixed 8-12 hour timer.
The defrost cycle: compressor and fans stop, the board energizes the defrost heater, ice melts, the defrost thermostat opens at 45-55F cutting heater power, meltwater drains to the pan above the compressor.
DE triggers when the thermostat never opens within maximum heater runtime (20-30 minutes).

Component Testing
- Unplug. Remove freezer back panel to expose the evaporator
- If coils are completely iced, manual defrost first (leave door open 4-8 hours)
- Defrost heater: Disconnect, measure resistance. 20-40 ohms expected. OL = dead
- Defrost thermostat: At room temperature, should show continuity. Open at room temp = failed
- Drain tube: If ice pools at the bottom rather than uniformly on coils, the drain is clogged
Food Safety Timeline
As frost blocks the evaporator, airflow drops progressively:
- Freezer warms first (ice cream softens, items near vents stay colder)
- Refrigerator section follows as damper-controlled air from the freezer diminishes
- Monitor with thermometer: above 40F for 2+ hours = discard perishables
