Frigidaire Refrigerator Switch Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
The primary switch on a Frigidaire refrigerator is the door switch — a small plunger-style microswitch mounted on the door frame that detects whether the door is open or closed. It controls two things: the interior light (on when door opens) and the evaporator fan (off when door opens, on when door closes). Some models have separate switches for each function; others combine both into one.
What the Door Switch Controls
| Door Position | Interior Light | Evaporator Fan |
|---|---|---|
| Door open | ON | OFF |
| Door closed | OFF | ON |
The evaporator fan must stop when the door opens to prevent warm room air from being pulled across the cold evaporator coils (which would cause excessive frost buildup). This is why a stuck-closed door switch causes frost problems — the fan runs even with the door open.

Symptoms of Door Switch Failure
- Interior light stays on with the door closed — the switch is stuck in the "door open" position. The light staying on also means the evaporator fan is off — the compartments will warm
- Interior light never comes on — the switch is stuck in the "door closed" position, or the light bulb is burned out. Test the bulb first
- Evaporator fan runs with the door open — switch stuck closed. You hear the fan running when the door is open (normally it should stop)
- Evaporator fan never runs — switch stuck open. The fan thinks the door is always open. Both compartments warm gradually
- Frost buildup on the evaporator — if the fan runs with the door open (switch stuck closed), warm humid air is drawn across the evaporator coils, causing excessive ice buildup
SpaceWise Clip Interference
Frigidaire's SpaceWise shelf system uses small plastic clips that can break and drop fragments near the door switch plunger. A fragment sitting under the plunger can keep the switch permanently depressed (stuck closed) or prevent it from depressing fully (stuck open). Before replacing the switch, inspect the plunger area for broken clip fragments.

Testing the Door Switch
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Locate the switch — a small rectangular body with a protruding plunger, mounted on the door frame or inside the liner at the top of the fresh food compartment.
- Disconnect the wires (2 or 3 wires).
- Multimeter on continuity: press the plunger (simulating door closed) — should show one state. Release (simulating door open) — should show the other state. No change = failed switch.

Replacement
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- The switch is typically pressed into a bezel or held by a screw at the top of the fresh food compartment liner.
- Pry the bezel off gently (flat-head screwdriver) or remove the mounting screw.
- Disconnect the wire connector. Note wire positions.
- Install the new switch. Reconnect wires. Snap bezel back in or drive mounting screw.
- Plug in. Open and close the door — verify the light turns on/off and the fan stops/starts.
Tools: Flat-head screwdriver, multimeter. Time: 10–15 minutes.
