A GE dryer drum that won't turn comes down to one question: does the motor hum? A hum with a still drum means the drive belt (part WE12M29) has snapped and the drum now spins freely by hand. No hum at all means the motor won't start — a failed drive motor, or the door switch refusing to give it permission. A seized idler pulley or worn rollers fill in the rest.
The Hum Test Splits the Diagnosis#
Before removing a panel, listen when you press Start. GE dryers, electric GFD and gas GTD alike, share one drum-drive system — a belt wrapped around the drum and motor pulley, held taut by an idler, and riding on support rollers — so the drive diagnosis is identical regardless of how the dryer makes heat. If the motor hums or runs but the drum sits motionless, the drive path between motor and drum is broken, and a snapped belt is the overwhelming favorite. If there's no hum at all, the motor itself never started, which points at the motor or at the door switch that must give it the go-ahead. That single observation cuts the work in half.

The Causes, Most Common First#
Broken drive belt (WE12M29)#
The classic cause of a humming motor and a dead drum. The thin multi-rib belt wraps the drum and the motor pulley, and after eight to twelve years it frays and snaps, at which point the motor spins its pulley but nothing drives the drum. The unmistakable confirmation: with the dryer off, reach in and spin the drum by hand — a drum that turns freely with no resistance has lost its belt, because an intact belt and its idler create noticeable drag. Replacing the belt means routing the new WE12M29 around the drum and back under the idler and motor pulley in the correct path.
Seized idler pulley (WE12X10014)#
The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt, and when its bearing wears it first squeals loudly, then can seize — and a seized idler often takes the belt with it, chewing or snapping it. So a drum that stopped turning right after a period of squealing points here: replace the idler pulley (WE12X10014) along with the belt, because installing a fresh belt over a bad idler just destroys the new belt too.
Failed drive motor (WE17X10010)#
If there's no hum and the door switch checks out, the motor is the suspect. The drive motor has a built-in thermal protector that trips on overload, so a motor that runs then quits after warming, or won't start at all, may be overheating from a seized bearing or a bound drum. Worn motor bearings also give a constant whine while running. A motor that's electrically open or whose protector won't reset needs replacing (WE17X10010).
Worn drum rollers#
The drum rides on support rollers, and when they develop flat spots or their bearings dry out, they create a rhythmic thumping and add drag that makes the motor work harder — enough, when badly worn, to bind the drum or trip the motor's overload. Spin the drum by hand with the belt off and feel for rough or catching rollers, and replace them as a set so the drum turns true.
Door switch preventing start#
Don't forget the interlock: the motor won't start until the door switch (WE4M415) confirms the door is closed, so a failed switch produces the same no-hum, no-tumble symptom as a dead motor. Rule it out first with GE's diagnostic mode — hold Delay Start and My Cycle for three seconds to enter it — where an E3 code flags a door-switch fault. Clearing the switch before you tear into the drive train saves a lot of unnecessary work.
A Safe Order of Attack#
Kill power first — unplug the 240V cord on an electric GFD, or shut the gas and unplug the 120V cord on a gas GTD — since drive-train work means reaching past live components. Then follow the hum test: a humming motor with a still drum sends you to the belt, and if it squealed first, the idler too; no hum sends you to the door switch, then the motor. With the belt off, spin the drum by hand to feel the rollers and check that the drum turns freely. Because a broken belt and a worn idler travel together, replacing both at once is the durable fix — and it's the most common GE drum repair by far, well ahead of a motor, which is the priciest and least likely of the group.

Keep the Drive Train Healthy#
A few habits stretch the life of the belt, idler, and rollers. The biggest is airflow: a restricted vent makes the motor run hotter and work harder against a drum full of slow-drying clothes, which stresses the bearings and the motor's thermal protector, so clean the lint screen every load and have the vent cleaned yearly. Don't overload the drum either — a packed drum drags on the belt and rollers and is a common reason a tired idler finally seizes. And act on early warnings: a squeal that comes and goes is the idler bearing announcing itself well before it takes out the belt, and a rhythmic thump is a roller developing a flat spot, so catching either while the drum still turns lets you replace a single worn part on your schedule instead of a snapped belt and a seized idler on the dryer's. Because the belt, idler, and rollers all wear together over the same eight-to-twelve-year span, many technicians refresh the whole drive kit at once when they're already inside the cabinet.
