GE Café Burner Won't Shut Off — Causes & Fix

First step: cut the gas#
Do not wait on this one. Find the gas shutoff on the line feeding the range and close it so the burner extinguishes. A burner that ignores the knob is passing gas you cannot stop at the control, so removing the supply is the safe move before you investigate anything.
Don't confuse this with reignition clicking#
Café burners re-spark on their own if a flame is disturbed, so a burner that clicks is not the same as one that will not turn off. The problem here is a flame that stays lit — small or full — when the knob is fully in the off position. If instead you have clicking with the knobs off, that is a stuck spark switch, a different repair.

The valve that won't seat#
Each Café burner has a gas valve linked to its knob, and at off the valve should close completely. With age the internal grease stiffens or the seat wears, and the valve leaves a path open so a flame lingers. That valve is a replacement part; it is not something to clean or adjust back into sealing.
The stripped-knob case#
A worn knob can also be the culprit. If the knob's inner collar has rounded off, it turns to off while the valve stem stops short, leaving gas flowing. Pull the knob and rotate the exposed stem by hand; if the flame dies, a new knob restores control. If the flame stays with the stem fully closed, the valve is at fault.
