Filter basket clogged. Start here every single time. Lift the basket out, rinse it under running water until the mesh runs clear, and check that no grease remains. A loaded filter simply pumps the same dirty water back over your dishes, so no amount of detergent will help until it is clean.

Spray-arm jets blocked. Food particles and mineral scale plug the small holes in the spray arm, and even a handful of blocked jets leaves an entire zone under-washed. Lift the arm off, run a toothpick or fine pick through every hole, and flush it under the tap. Spin the arm by hand to confirm it turns freely before you refit it — a stiff arm sprays unevenly even with clear jets.

Wash-motor impeller worn. If the filter and spray arm are both clean but wash pressure still feels weak and the motor runs unusually quiet, the wash-motor impeller may be worn and no longer driving water with force. This is a service item rather than a rinse-and-refit fix. The upside is that each drawer has its own independent wash motor, so only the affected drawer needs attention.

Heating element weak. A DishDrawer leans on a hot wash to cut grease; the cycle should reach roughly 120–140°F. When dishes come out greasy and still wet, the element may not be bringing the water up to temperature, which shows first as poor drying and a filmy residue on glassware. Verify the wash is actually heating before replacing anything else downstream.

Overloaded or mis-loaded drawer. Because the drawer uses smaller spray arms and less water than a full tub, loading matters far more here. Overcrowding lets items shadow one another out of the spray pattern. Fisher & Paykel's own guidance is to run properly loaded smaller batches rather than pack a drawer full — a heavily soiled, overcrowded load is the one case the DishDrawer genuinely struggles with.

Step-by-step diagnosis#

1. Record the model and serial number from the plate inside the door frame — you need it to order the correct proprietary parts.
2. Note any indicator lights or code sequence on the panel; the DishDrawer's diagnostics narrow the cause quickly.
3. Pull and rinse the filter basket, then run a short cycle to see if cleaning recovers.
4. If it does not, remove and clear the spray arm and confirm it spins freely.
5. Still poor? Check that the wash is reaching temperature and that the drawer is not overloaded before you suspect the wash motor.
