On the electric tower, the resistive drying element dominates, pulling 24 to 30 amps at 240 volts, so it lands on a 30-amp double-pole breaker wired in 10-gauge copper — the same heavy feed a standalone electric dryer would claim. That circuit is always dedicated; you cannot share a 30-amp 240-volt line. The gas-heated laundry center is a different animal electrically: only the motor, timer, and controls run on household current, drawing 8 to 12 amps on a 15-to-20-amp 120-volt branch.
Gas vs. Electric: How the Electric Laundry Center Wiring Differs#
This is the fork that decides the whole install. The electric laundry center needs the heavy 240-volt, 30-amp circuit because its drying element heats by resistance, exactly like an electric dryer. Switch to the gas version and the drying heat comes from a gas burner instead, so the appliance falls back to an ordinary 120-volt wall outlet at 8 to 12 amps — the electricity now runs only the washer motor and the shared controls. If you are replacing a gas tower with an electric one, you are not swapping an outlet, you are running a new 240-volt line.

Installation and Safety Notes for Electric Laundry Center Wiring#
Match the cord to the outlet you actually have: an electric laundry center takes a 30-amp dryer cord terminating in a 14-30R or 10-30R plug, and newer installs use the four-wire 14-30R for a separate ground. A gas tower simply plugs into a grounded 5-15R receptacle. Running a new 240-volt, 30-amp branch is permit-and-inspection work, and confirming the existing dryer outlet's wiring and grounding before you hang a heavy stacked unit is squarely a licensed electrician's job. Do not adapt a three-wire cord to a four-wire outlet by guesswork.
