Dacor Range Igniter Not Working — Causes & Fix

When a Dacor range oven igniter glows but the burner never lights, the igniter has almost always weakened below the current it needs to open the gas safety valve. A glowing igniter looks fine, but it is the amperage it draws — not the glow — that opens the valve, so the fix starts with a clamp meter, not your eyes.

1. Igniter amperage below threshold#

Dacor's round oven igniter is a silicon-carbide element that has to draw enough current — typically 3.2 to 3.6 amps — to open the gas valve's safety solenoid. As it ages its resistance climbs and its draw falls, so it can glow visibly yet never reach the threshold and no gas flows. Clamp-meter the draw: below about 3.0 amps it is too weak, and a healthy igniter reaches bright orange-white within 60 seconds. Always replace with the OEM-spec amperage rating.

2. Igniter cracked from thermal cycling#

Years of heating and cooling can crack the ceramic igniter element, which makes ignition intermittent — working some days, failing others as the crack opens and closes with temperature. Inspect it for a visible crack, and replace it rather than trying to nurse a cracked element through another season.

3. Gas safety valve bimetal failed#

Some gas ovens hold the valve open with a bimetal strip that bends as the flame heats it, and over time that strip fatigues and can no longer hold the valve — so the flame lights but dies within seconds of releasing the knob, even with a strong flame present. Hold the knob in for 30-plus seconds; if the flame dies every time on release, the bimetal has failed and the valve is replaced as a unit.

4. Corroded igniter connector#

The wire connector at the igniter terminals corrodes in the oven's hot, sometimes humid environment, adding resistance that starves the igniter of current — the same weak-draw symptom as a tired igniter. Inspect the connector for green or white deposits and clean or replace it before condemning the igniter itself.

5. Control-board igniter relay#

Less often, the control board's relay that powers the igniter circuit fails and the igniter never energizes at all. Look at the board for bulging capacitors, darkened joints, or burnt relay contacts, and power-cycle at the breaker for ten minutes — a fault that returns immediately is a board hardware failure.

Working Through It#

Record the model and serial from the plate and note any code on the panel, then confirm the gas supply is on and the other burners light normally so you know gas is reaching the range. Watch the oven igniter during a preheat: a bright orange-white glow that still will not light points at the safety valve or its bimetal, while a dim glow points at the igniter or its connector. Clamp-metering the draw settles it — anything under about 3.0 amps condemns the igniter.
