Bosch Gas Stove Burner Won't Turn Off: Causes

Make it safe first#

Turn the wall shutoff a quarter turn so its handle sits across the pipe. Out of reach? Shut the gas at the meter. Crack a window and keep the range off until the valve is fixed. Forcing the knob is the single move that makes this worse — the valve stem can break, and then the burner cannot be shut off at all except at the wall.

Why a Bosch burner valve sticks#

Bosch's sealed surface burners keep spills off the cooktop, but the valve bodies still wear the same way:

• The valve no longer seats. Grease works into the stem and years of heat cycling round off the seat, so the valve stays cracked open when you turn off. A gas valve's internals cannot be reliably cleaned — the valve is replaced.
• The knob or its shaft is stripped. The knob grips a flatted shaft; when either wears round, the knob turns but the valve doesn't. A fresh knob is the cheap first try, and if the shaft itself is chewed the valve goes too.
• The closing spring is broken. A small spring snaps the valve shut; when it fails, gas pressure can drift the valve back open. It is not sold separately, so again the valve is replaced.

A safe check with the gas off#

With the supply closed, pull the knob and study the shaft and the knob's socket. Rounded flats or a loose collar mean a knob or shaft fault — try a new knob. If a good knob turns the shaft cleanly but the burner still won't cut off, the valve body has failed inside and needs a professional swap.

Ahead of the holidays#

A burner you can only kill at the wall is not one you want feeding an all-day holiday cook. Have the valve replaced before the season rather than nursing it — it means opening the gas manifold and leak-testing afterward, which is exactly why it belongs with a technician. Not a DIY repair#

Valve work means breaking into the gas manifold, pulling the control panel, and testing for leaks. On a Bosch range the sealed-burner valve is a specific part, and the right fitting and torque matter — this is a licensed-technician job, not a weekend one.
