Bosch Gas Stove Burner Won't Ignite: Causes & Fix

First, the click test#

Turn a surface burner to light and listen. If it sparks but won't catch, the ignition system is working and the trouble is at the burner. If nothing clicks on any burner, the spark module that feeds all of them has quit; if just one stays silent, that burner's electrode or its wiring is the suspect. That one observation separates a five-minute cleaning from a parts swap.

Clicks but won't catch#

Bosch's sealed burners keep spills out of the guts, but the cap and head still trap moisture and grease that short the spark:

• Pull the cap and head, and let any dampness from a boil-over or a wipe-down dry off completely.
• Run a straight pin through each port — skip the toothpick, whose tip can lodge and block a port.
• Set the cap back flat so the spark reaches the gas; a cap sitting cocked misfires.
• Look at the ceramic electrode for a crack or a wide, sooted gap; it should sit a small fraction of an inch off the burner.

The oven side#

A Bosch oven burner is gated by a safety valve that only opens once its glow-bar igniter pulls full current. The catch is that a worn igniter still glows — it just can't draw enough to release the gas. If yours lights up orange but takes far longer than a minute to get there, or reads high on an ohmmeter, it has aged past its useful life even though it looks alive. These glow bars generally last a handful of years; the solid-state surface sparkers last far longer.

Before the holidays#

A burner that lights on the third try is a burner about to stop lighting, and it will pick your busiest cooking day to do it. If the oven has grown slow to fire through the fall, have the igniter's draw tested and replaced ahead of the holiday cooking rather than during it.
