The short answer
F12 means the control has found a problem with one of the cooking zones, which the brand calls a hotplate, burner or element, or with its wiring. Other zones may still work, but stop using the affected one; if you cannot tell which zone it is, stop using the cooktop until it is checked.

|---|---|
| F12 | There may be a problem with a Hotplate (Cooking Surface/Burner/Element), or the associated wiring. |
What the cooktop does with the code showing
- One zone does not heat — Most often a single zone, while the others work.
- A zone heats weakly or unevenly — Part of an element or coil not working.
- The code appears when one particular zone is switched on — That identifies the zone for the technician.
- NEAR MISS: no zone heats although the keys respond — That is more likely a power board or supply fault than a single zone.
Likely causes, in order
- Element or coil failed — The most common cause: the heating part under one zone burns open or shorts with age.
- Loose or burnt connection at the zone — Second: the terminals carry heavy current, and a loose one heats and fails.
- Wiring between zone and control — Third: a damaged lead between the zone and its board.
- Board output for that zone — Last: the board that drives the zone stops delivering power to it.
Where to start, and what comes next
- Test each zone in turn — Identify which zone sets the code.
- Look at the glass over that zone — Cracks or marks are worth reporting; stop using a cracked top.
- Breaker reset — Rules out a passing control error.
- Technician measures the element and wiring — Resistance and connection checks under the glass.
What you can safely do
- Zone-by-zone test — Switch on one zone at a time with a pan of water and note which one shows the code.

- Breaker reset — Switch the breaker off for a minute, then on, and retest that zone.
About 2 min
- Inspect the glass — With the cooktop cool, look over the affected zone for cracks or damage.

- STOP here if the next check needs a panel off — Anything behind a panel is a power-off technician job, and the tests that follow it are made on live circuits.
Power off before any panel
Safety
Switch off the cooktop’s breaker before removing it from the counter or opening anything underneath: most cooktops are hard-wired, with no plug to pull. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Let the glass cool before cleaning or inspecting it.
The point to call
Call when the same zone sets the code after a reset, or straight away if the glass over it is cracked. Element, coil and wiring repairs mean lifting the cooktop and working on high-current connections, which is technician work.

Generalized information
This is generalized information: it reads F12 the way Amana documents it for Amana electric and induction cooktops with touch controls. It does not apply to Amana gas cooktops, Amana ranges, whose surface codes are listed with the oven codes, or sister brands on the same platform, whose lists can read differently. No model-specific page for F12 exists yet; when one does, it is the more specific answer for that model line.
