What C82 means
C82 means the cooktop does not accept the pan or pot on the zone: the brand’s reading is that it is not the right size, usually too small for the zone it sits on. Nothing has failed; move to a pan whose base suits the zone, or to a smaller zone, and the cooktop will heat.

|---|---|
| C82 | Pan/pot is not the right size. |
What you observe
- The zone will not start, or stops after a few seconds — The control checks the pan before delivering power.
- The display flashes on one zone only — Other zones with suitable pans work normally.
- Small pans, espresso pots or narrow kettles trigger it — Narrow bases are the classic case.
- NEAR MISS: no pan of any size works on any zone — That is not a cookware issue; it is a fault in the zones or the control.
What usually sets this code
- Pan base too small for the zone — The most common cause: the zone needs a minimum base size to detect the pan, and small or narrow-based pans fall below it.
- Cookware not suited to induction — Second: on induction zones the base must be magnetic; a pan a magnet will not hold reads as no pan, or the wrong one.
- Warped base or pan off-centre — Third: a base that does not sit flat, or sits off the zone, covers less of it than its size suggests.
- Zone sensing fault — Last: if known-good pans fail on that zone too, the zone’s detection is at fault.
Check in this order
- Try the pan on a smaller zone — If it heats there, it was simply too small for the first zone.
- Do the magnet test — A fridge magnet that holds firmly to the base means the pan suits induction.
- Check the base is flat — Set the pan on the counter and see whether it rocks.
- Try a known-good pan on the same zone — If that also fails, the zone itself needs checking.
Clearing the code, then checking
- Move to a matching zone — Put the pan on the zone closest to its base size, centred.
About 2 min
- Magnet test — Hold a magnet to the base; weak or no grip means the pan is not suitable for induction.
Tools: fridge magnetAbout 2 min
- Known-good pan test — Run a pan that works elsewhere on the zone that showed the code.
Tools: induction-ready panAbout 5 min
- STOP if no pan works on that zone — That is a sensing or power fault for a technician; there is nothing more to try from above the glass.
Safety for this cooktop
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a cooktop that usually means the breaker, because the unit is wired into a junction box under the counter. Do not use a cooktop with cracked glass.
When to call a technician
Call only if a suitable, flat, magnetic pan of the right size still shows C82 on that zone, or every zone rejects every pan. Otherwise the fix is the cookware, not the cooktop.

Scope of this reading
The reading above covers Amana electric and induction cooktops with touch controls. It does not cover Amana gas cooktops, Amana ranges, whose surface codes are listed with the oven codes, or sister brands on the same platform, whose lists can read differently. A model-specific page for C82, where one exists, is the more specific answer; none exists yet, so check the use-and-care guide for your exact model before ordering any part. On Amana ranges, the oven code list carries a C82 entry with a different reading, an overheated surface cooking area and its automatic shutoff; if your cooktop is part of a range, that entry may be the one that applies.
