Whirlpool Smart Refrigerator Error Code F-Con
F-Con on a Whirlpool smart refrigerator (WRX986SIHZ, WRS588FIHZ, WRF767SDHZ series) means the app's smart filter-monitoring lost sync with the fridge's filter-tracking system. The panel's own filter indicator still works, and your water is filtered normally — only the app's usage-based tracking and replacement…
What F-Con means#
These fridges track filter life two ways: the traditional timer-based indicator on the panel (green/yellow/red, counting down from reset) and the app's smart monitoring (which counts gallons dispensed to estimate remaining capacity). F-Con means the smart side lost its data connection to the filter-tracking hardware — usually because the filter module's data bus to the Wi-Fi module was interrupted.
Smart or hardware?#
It is a smart-feature communication issue. The panel indicator keeps working independently, and the physical filter and water dispensing are unaffected — only the app's enhanced (usage-based) tracking is gone.

Reset it#
- Reset the filter in the app. Whirlpool app > fridge > Filter Status > Reset Filter re-initializes the smart baseline. If it says "Unable to reset," continue.
- Power-cycle. Unplug for about three minutes to reset the data bus between the flow sensor, main board, and Wi-Fi module; check the app after 5-10 minutes for the status to repopulate.
- Reseat the filter. Twist the cartridge out, wait about ten seconds, and reinstall until it clicks — this resets the detection switch and forces a re-read (and on RFID-equipped models, re-runs filter authentication).
- Re-pair. If F-Con persists, remove the fridge from the app, wait about five minutes, and re-add it; a fresh pairing re-syncs all data channels including filter monitoring.
When it is the flow sensor#
If F-Con returns within days of each reset, the water flow sensor that counts gallons may have failed — it is a small turbine-style meter in the supply line inside the fridge. With it dead, the smart monitoring cannot track usage, though the panel's timer indicator is unaffected because it does not use the flow sensor.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Wi-Fi module vs. board#
F-Con rarely needs the Wi-Fi module unless its data-bus interface failed. If the app shows the fridge online and other smart features (temperature, door alerts) work, the module is fine and the problem is specific to the filter channel. Only if all smart features are down does the Wi-Fi module (W11201286) come into question. Most F-Con cases clear with an app reset or power cycle at no cost.
Why the app tracking is worth restoring#
It is fair to ask whether F-Con is worth fixing at all, given the panel indicator still works — and for many households the honest answer is that the panel light is enough. But the smart tracking earns its keep for two kinds of users. Light-water households waste money on the fixed six-month timer: if you barely use the dispenser, a filter can be good for well over a year, and the app's gallon counting tells you that where the panel would have you replace it early. Heavy-water households have the opposite problem — they can exhaust a filter well before six months, and the app catches that before taste or flow degrades. So restoring F-Con is about matching filter changes to actual use rather than a blanket timer, which either saves you filters or protects your water depending on your habits.

Prevent it#
Replace the filter on schedule (about every six months or when the indicator goes red). On RFID-equipped models, aftermarket filters without proper chips can cause F-Con because the smart monitoring cannot authenticate them. Keep the app updated so it reads filter data from newer firmware correctly, and after a power outage check the app's filter status within a day to catch F-Con early.
