Viking Oven F04: Temperature Runaway — Heating Not Cycling Off
F04 on Viking ovens indicates the oven temperature is rising beyond the set point because the heating source (element or gas burner) is not cycling off when commanded. This is closely related to F03 (over-temperature) but occurs at an earlier stage — the board detects the temperature trend exceeding the expected heating curve before reaching the absolute maximum limit.
F04 vs F03: Escalation Sequence
- F04: Temperature rising faster than expected. Board detects the trend. Warning level.
- F03: Temperature exceeded absolute maximum. Board confirmed actual overheating. Emergency level.
F04 often precedes F03 if the condition is not addressed. The board attempts to de-energize the heating source when it detects F04. If de-energization fails (welded relay, stuck valve), temperature continues rising to F03.

Viking-Specific Concerns
Viking's commercial-grade burners and high-wattage elements produce heat rapidly. The window between F04 (trend detection) and F03 (absolute maximum) can be as short as 3-5 minutes on Viking ranges vs 10-15 minutes on consumer ovens. Respond quickly.
Diagnosis
- Power off and let cool completely
- Restore power and set to 350F
- Use an independent oven thermometer to verify actual temperature
- When the thermometer reads 350F, observe: does the element/burner cycle off? If not, the relay or valve is stuck
- Also check the temperature sensor — a sensor reading 50-100 degrees low would cause the board to overshoot the set point
