Viking Oven F03: Over-Temperature Safety Shutoff — Cavity Exceeded Maximum
F03 on Viking ovens is a safety code — the oven temperature exceeded the maximum allowed by the control board. During normal baking, this limit is approximately 625F. During self-clean, approximately 925F. The board immediately de-energizes all heating sources (elements and/or gas valves) and displays F03.
Why F03 Is Critical on Viking Ranges
Viking's massive BTU output means temperature can escalate faster than consumer ovens when a control fault occurs. A welded relay or stuck gas valve on a Viking with 30,000+ BTU combined oven output can raise cavity temperature dangerously fast — minutes rather than the 15-20 minutes it takes on a consumer oven.

Immediate Actions
- Turn off the breaker immediately
- For gas models: turn off the gas shutoff valve behind the range
- Open windows for ventilation if smoke is present
- Let the oven cool completely before investigation
Root Causes
Welded relay on the control board: The relay contacts fused from arcing, keeping an element or gas valve energized continuously. Test: set oven to 350F, watch if elements cycle off at temperature. Continuous operation = welded relay.
Gas safety valve stuck open (gas models): The gas safety valve's bimetallic strip may fail to close when de-energized. The gas burner stays lit regardless of board commands. This is especially dangerous and requires immediate gas shutoff.
Temperature sensor reading low: A drifted sensor tells the board the oven is cooler than actual, causing extended heating. Test sensor resistance against specifications.
