Prove it first#
Set a familiar baking temperature, allow a full preheat plus ten minutes to settle, and read a thermometer on the middle rack. A few degrees off is within tolerance for this design; it is a genuine fault when the oven runs consistently wide of the mark or swings high and low. Confirm before assuming a part failed.
Sensor drift — the usual cause#
Thermador ranges such as the PRD486WD and wall ovens like the POD302LV read the cavity with an RTD probe at the rear wall. As it ages it can drift off its correct resistance and feed the board a wrong reading, so the oven settles off target with the temperature quietly wrong. A hard sensor failure — open or shorted — throws an E1 or E2 code and stops normal operation. Measured cold at the connector, a value outside the expected range means a new sensor.

Calibration offset#
Thermador ovens carry a user calibration offset in the settings menu, a legacy of Bosch-group European tuning. If yours has wandered — often after a repair or a power event — reset the offset back toward zero and retest against the thermometer. Once the true gap is larger than the offset can cover, the sensor or board is the fix, not more calibration.
Uneven, not just wrong#
If one side of a bake scorches while the other stays pale, the convection fan is the suspect, not the sensor. A seized or burned-out fan motor stops circulating heat; listen at the rear wall during a convection cycle for grinding or silence. Larger Professional ovens can run more than one fan, so one can quit while the other hides it.
