How the reorder actually gets triggered#

There are two mechanisms, and they are not equally accurate. Level sensing is used by washers with a bulk auto-dispense reservoir (Samsung Auto Dispense, GE SmartDispense, Whirlpool Load & Go): a float sensor reads the tank, and when it falls to roughly 15% to 20% full the washer tells the brand cloud to place a Dash order. Cycle-count estimation is the fallback on washers without a reservoir — the app counts loads, assumes an average dose, and orders when the running estimate crosses a threshold. Level sensing reflects what is really in the tank; cycle counting is only an approximation and drifts whenever your dose size varies.

Setting it up by brand#

Samsung SmartThings: Washer > Settings > Auto-Reorder > Enable, link Amazon when prompted, pick a detergent from the Amazon list, and set the trigger point (the default fires near 20% remaining). Samsung times the order a few days before the tank empties so delivery has room to land.

GE SmartHQ: Washer > SmartDispense > Auto-Reorder, link Amazon, choose the product. GE Profile models with dual tanks track detergent and softener separately, and each can reorder on its own. The SmartDispense tank is the largest on the market — it holds many loads, so reorders are infrequent.

Whirlpool Load & Go: Whirlpool app > Washer > Load & Go Settings > Auto-Reorder, which hooks into Dash the same way. Whirlpool's tank is smaller than GE's, so expect refills to trigger more often.

LG ThinQ: LG's ezDispense tracks levels but does not offer automatic buying today. As a workaround, use an IFTTT rule that pings you after a set number of cycles so you can reorder by hand.

Is it worth turning on?#

Auto-reorder earns its keep only if your habits match it. It is genuinely convenient when you always use the same HE liquid detergent and already buy from Amazon — you never run out and never think about it. It works against you if you buy in bulk elsewhere, chase coupons or sales, or switch brands, because Dash always pays the current Amazon price on a fixed short list of products and cannot apply a discount. Dash does protect you from runaway spending: only one order per product can be open at a time, so it cannot reorder again until the last shipment arrives.

Turning it off cleanly#

Disable it in two places, not one. In the brand app: Washer > Auto-Reorder > Disable. Then in Amazon: Account > Dash Replenishment > manage devices > remove the washer. Switching it off in the app does not always drop the Amazon link, so confirm both sides or a stray order can still slip through weeks later.

Check compatibility before you count on it#

Auto-order only exists on washers with the reorder hooks built in — Samsung Auto Dispense, GE SmartDispense, and Whirlpool Load & Go models tied to their apps. A plain connected washer without a bulk reservoir can still estimate by cycle count on some models, but many simply do not offer the feature at all, and no firmware update adds a reservoir that is not physically there. Confirm your exact model supports it in the brand app before you rely on it, and make sure the appliance holds a stable Wi-Fi connection — a washer that keeps dropping offline misses the low-level signal and skips the reorder entirely, which defeats the point.

What it will not do#

Auto-order does not hunt for the lowest price, does not stack coupons, and does not switch you to whatever is on sale that week — it buys the one product you selected at the current Amazon price. It also will not manage fabric softener unless your model has a separate softener tank that you enrolled on its own. Treat it as a convenience for a fixed habit, not a way to save money.
