What F5 E3 means#

The door lock on a Whirlpool front-loader is more than a latch: it holds a wax-motor actuator, a position sensor, and a communication line back to the main board. F5 E3 fires when the board sends a lock or unlock command and gets no acknowledgment from the lock within its timeout (about 30 seconds). The washer stops the cycle as a safety measure because it cannot confirm the door is secured.

Smart feature or hardware?#

Hardware — the same code appears on non-smart Whirlpool washers. The smart twist is cosmetic: when the cycle state machine drops into its error branch, the app often cannot render the specific code and shows a generic "Cycle Interrupted" or "Check Appliance," which misleads owners into thinking the app broke. Reset first#
