LG ThinQ smart washers (WM4000H, WM6500H, WM8900HBA) show "CL" on the display when Child Lock is active. While Child Lock primarily prevents physical button presses, it also blocks all remote commands from the ThinQ app — including remote start, cycle changes, and pause/resume.
The CL + Wi-Fi Interaction#
Child Lock on LG washers is a comprehensive input lock. It blocks:
- Physical button presses on the control panel
- Rotary selector changes
- ThinQ app remote start commands
- ThinQ app cycle modification commands
- ThinQ app pause/resume commands
It does NOT block:
- ThinQ app status monitoring (you can see cycle progress)
- Smart Diagnosis
- Firmware updates
- Power button (to turn the washer off)

Why This Confuses Users#
The ThinQ app does not clearly indicate that Child Lock is blocking remote commands. The app shows the washer as "Online" and presents the Start button — but tapping it produces "Unable to start" or "Command failed" without mentioning Child Lock. This leads users to believe the Wi-Fi or app has malfunctioned.
How to Resolve#
Disable Child Lock on the washer:
- WM4000H: Press and hold the Temp and Rinse buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. "CL" disappears from the display.
- WM6500H: Press and hold the Temp and Options buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds.
- WM8900HBA: Press and hold the Custom Program and Rinse buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds.
After disabling Child Lock, ThinQ remote commands work immediately — no re-pairing or reconnection needed.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

When CL Activates Unexpectedly#
Child Lock can activate accidentally when cleaning the control panel (wiping with a cloth can press and hold the right button combination). It also persists through power cycles — turning the washer off and back on does not disable Child Lock.
If "CL" appears on the display without anyone intentionally activating it, the button membrane contacts may be shorting. Cleaning solution seeping under the control panel overlay can create phantom button presses. Dry the control panel area thoroughly with a cloth.
ThinQ App Enhancement Note#
LG has been gradually updating the ThinQ app to display a "Child Lock Active" banner when CL is detected. As of ThinQ app version 5.8.0 (2026), this banner appears on the device card. Older app versions do not show this indicator — update the app to see it.

Is This a Smart-Feature Issue or a Hardware Issue?#
CL-Wi is a user configuration issue, not a hardware or smart-feature failure. Child Lock is an intentional safety feature working correctly. The ThinQ app's failure to clearly communicate that Child Lock is blocking commands is a UX issue that LG has been addressing in recent app updates.
How Can You Prevent This?#
Before calling for service when ThinQ commands fail, check the washer display for "CL" — this 3-second check can save a service call. Avoid wiping the control panel with excessive moisture — liquid seeping under the overlay can trigger phantom button presses that activate Child Lock. Update the ThinQ app to version 5.8.0+ which displays a clear "Child Lock Active" banner.

Frequently Asked Questions#
Q: Why does Child Lock block Wi-Fi commands? A: LG designed Child Lock as a comprehensive input lock — it blocks all command sources (physical buttons AND app commands) to prevent children from starting or modifying cycles through any means. Only monitoring (status viewing) and diagnostics are allowed during Child Lock.
Q: Does Child Lock turn off when I restart the washer? A: No. Child Lock persists through power cycles. Turning the washer off and back on does not disable Child Lock. You must use the specific button combination (varies by model) to disable it manually.
Q: Can I disable Child Lock through the ThinQ app? A: No. Child Lock can only be disabled on the physical washer control panel. This is a safety design — if the app could disable Child Lock, a child using the app could bypass the protection.
Q: Does Child Lock affect the dryer too? A: If you have an LG smart dryer paired with the washer, each appliance has its own independent Child Lock. Activating Child Lock on the washer does not affect the dryer, and vice versa. Each must be disabled individually on its own control panel.
Q: How common is accidental Child Lock activation? A: Fairly common. The button combination to activate Child Lock (e.g., Temp + Rinse held 3 seconds) can be triggered accidentally while cleaning the control panel with a damp cloth, or by a child pressing multiple buttons. CL appears on the display — if you see CL, that is always the first thing to check before calling for service.
