LG Smart Washer Error Code CL-Wi
"CL" on an LG ThinQ washer (WM4000H, WM6500H, WM8900HBA) is Child Lock — and it blocks every remote command from the app, not just the physical buttons. The app still shows the washer online and offers a Start button, so a blocked remote start looks like a Wi-Fi failure when it is really Child Lock. The fix is to…
What Child Lock actually blocks#
LG built Child Lock as a total input lock. It blocks physical button presses, the rotary selector, and every ThinQ remote command — remote start, cycle changes, and pause/resume. It does not block status monitoring (you can still watch cycle progress), Smart Diagnosis, firmware updates, or the power button.
Why it looks like a connectivity bug#
The app does not clearly say Child Lock is the reason a command failed. It shows the washer as "Online," presents Start, and then returns "Unable to start" or "Command failed" with no mention of CL. Naturally, owners assume the Wi-Fi or app broke — when the washer is simply refusing all remote input by design.

How to disable it (by model)#
The combination varies:
- WM4000H: hold Temp and Rinse together for three seconds until CL clears.
- WM6500H: hold Temp and Options together for three seconds.
- WM8900HBA: hold Custom Program and Rinse together for three seconds.
Once CL is off, ThinQ commands work immediately — no re-pairing or reconnecting needed.
When CL turns on by itself#
Child Lock persists through power cycles, so turning the washer off and on will not clear it — it has to be disabled with the button combo. It can also switch on accidentally: wiping the control panel with a damp cloth can press and hold the right buttons, and moisture seeping under the panel overlay can create phantom presses. If CL appears without anyone setting it, dry the panel thoroughly, since a shorting membrane can keep re-triggering it.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Smart feature or hardware?#
Neither, really — CL-Wi is a configuration state, not a fault. Child Lock is working exactly as designed; the only real shortcoming is the app not saying so, which LG has been addressing by adding a "Child Lock Active" banner on the device card in newer ThinQ versions. Update the app to get that indicator.
Does it affect a paired dryer?#
If you run an LG smart dryer alongside the washer, each appliance keeps its own independent Child Lock — turning CL on at the washer does not touch the dryer, and vice versa. Each has to be cleared on its own control panel with its own button combination. So a "nothing responds to the app" complaint on a laundry pair can actually be two separate Child Locks, each needing its own three-second reset.

How common is accidental activation?#
More common than you would expect. The activate combo is easy to trigger by accident — a damp cloth dragged across Temp and Rinse, or a child mashing buttons, is enough. Because CL survives power cycles and the app does not announce it, an accidental activation can look like a dead smart feature for days until someone notices the small CL on the display. Making that display check your first step turns a would-be service call into a three-second fix.
Prevent the false alarm#
Before you ever call for service because ThinQ commands fail, glance at the washer display for "CL" — that three-second check heads off a wasted service call. Avoid over-wetting the control panel when cleaning it, and update ThinQ so the Child Lock banner appears when CL is active.

Why LG designed it this way#
Child Lock is deliberately a comprehensive input lock rather than a panel-only one, because the point is to stop a child from starting or changing a cycle by any route — including a phone left unlocked with the ThinQ app open. If Child Lock blocked only the physical buttons, a curious child could still fill and run the washer from the app, so LG extends the lock to every command source and allows only harmless monitoring through. The trade-off is exactly the confusion this code causes: the safest design also happens to be the one most likely to look like a connectivity failure, which is why the display check is the real fix.
