Smart vs Regular Range Repair Cost
A smart range is a smart oven and a smart cooktop in one, so it stacks the smart-specific failure points of both — and it carries the highest repair premium of any smart appliance category. The reason is placement: the touchscreen sits directly above active burners, where grease, steam, and heat attack it. The core…
What is inside a smart range#
- Full-color LCD touchscreen. Samsung NE63A ranges use a 5.8-inch LCD (DG94-04254A); GE Profile uses a 4.3-inch touchscreen (WB27X35392). Both are larger and pricier than a traditional keypad, and both sit right above the cooktop.
- Wi-Fi, sometimes doubled. Some ranges run two Wi-Fi modules, one for the oven and one for the cooktop. Samsung NE63A integrates a single module; GE Profile PGS930 (dual-fuel) uses separate controllers for the gas cooktop and electric oven.
- Air-fry smart sensor. Air-fry-capable smart ranges add a temperature sensor and fan controller for the mode; Samsung's air-fry sensor (DG32-00054A) watches basket temperature separately from the main cavity.
The grease-and-steam problem#
A membrane keypad is sealed plastic with no seams, so it shrugs off a cooktop's steam and splatter. An LCD touchscreen has edge seals that can fail, letting moisture in and causing ghost touches, dead zones, or outright failure. Makers have pushed back — Samsung added a water-resistant seal on later NE63A models, and GE recesses the touchscreen behind a raised bezel to deflect splatter — but touchscreen failure on smart ranges still runs roughly double that of smart wall ovens, which are not perched above burners.

Why the premium is highest here#
Two things compound on a range that do not on other appliances. First, it literally doubles the smart hardware — every oven module plus every cooktop module — so there is simply more to fail. Second, the single most failure-prone part, the touchscreen, sits in the worst possible spot, taking steam off boiling pots and grease off frying pans on top of the heat rising from the burners. A smart [dishwasher](/blog/repair-or-replace-dishwasher)'s electronics live behind a sealed door; a smart fridge's screen faces a climate-controlled room; a smart range's screen faces an open flame. That environmental mismatch, more than the parts cost alone, is why range repairs top the smart-premium list.
The core range is unchanged#
As with every smart-versus-traditional comparison, none of this touches the cooking itself. Burners, igniters, the bake and broil elements, and the oven thermostat are shared with the non-smart range and repaired at the same cost. A smart range that needs a new igniter is no pricier there than a plain one — the gap is the connected controls and the exposed touchscreen, nothing structural.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Buy smart, or split the difference?#
Buy smart if you want one connected cooking appliance with remote preheat, guided cooking, and app-linked air fry. But if you want smart features with lower repair risk, the shrewd move is a traditional range paired with a separate smart wall oven — that gets you app-based cooking while keeping the touchscreen out of the splatter zone entirely. The core range mechanics are the same either way and cost the same to repair; the premium you are weighing is strictly the touchscreen-above-burners exposure.
