What this Samsung vs Whirlpool comparison is based on#
Two federal complaint records are counted here: 1,556 CPSC SaferProducts incident reports naming a component on a Samsung refrigerator between 2011 and 2026, and 170 doing the same for a Whirlpool refrigerator across the same window. Each share belongs to its own column, and neither total counts refrigerators sold or in service.
Both records agree on first place, and agree hard#
The ice maker leads both columns, and in both it takes a larger share than any leading row elsewhere in this comparison set: 46% of the Samsung record, 715 filings, and 34% of the Whirlpool one, 58 filings.
Twelve points separates them, which is a wide gap in absolute terms and a narrow one relative to the size of the rows involved. Whatever else these two records disagree about, they agree that the ice maker is where complaints about a refrigerator concentrate, and they agree by a margin no other pairing here matches.
That shared result is the most useful thing on the page, and it does not depend on the comparison at all — it is two independent records reaching the same conclusion about the same component.
The compressor is the real separation#
The compressor takes 19% of the Whirlpool record, 32 filings, and 4% of the Samsung one, 66 filings. Fifteen points, in Whirlpool's direction, and the widest gap here.
Read the counts and the shape of the difference changes. Samsung's smaller share rests on twice as many filings as Whirlpool's larger one. Percentages compare emphasis within a record; they never compare quantities across records with different denominators, and a factor of nine between 1,556 and 170 makes that especially visible.
So the defensible statement is about emphasis: nearly a fifth of the Whirlpool complaints that named a part named the compressor, against about one in twenty-five on the Samsung side. Both figures rest on real counts.
The wiring row, and the rows Samsung has instead#
The wiring or power cord takes 9% of the Whirlpool record, sixteen filings, against 1% of the Samsung one, nine filings — 8 points, and another case where the larger share sits on the smaller count.
Running the other way, Samsung's record carries three rows that Whirlpool's cannot support: the control board at 5% on 72 filings, the evaporator at 4% on 58, and the thermostat or sensor at 3% on 39. The corresponding Whirlpool rows are four filings, one, and one.
That is the advantage of a very large record, and it is worth being precise about what it buys. It buys resolution: Samsung's 3% row is 39 reports, so it is a genuine feature rather than an accident. It does not buy validity, because a bigger complaint record with no denominator is still a share of complaints.
Two ways of concentrating, and they are not the same thing#
Both records are concentrated, and it is worth separating how. Samsung's concentration is vertical: one component takes nearly half the record and everything else is small, so its top row holds more than its next eleven rows put together. Whirlpool's is horizontal: three components hold 106 of its 170 filings, and the weight is shared between them.
That difference changes what each record is useful for. A vertically concentrated record gives a very strong first answer and almost no second one — anyone diagnosing a Samsung refrigerator gets one confident pointer and then a cluster of small, well-measured possibilities. A horizontally concentrated record gives a shortlist, which is often the more practical shape.
It also affects how the gaps between them should be read. The compressor and wiring gaps are, in part, a consequence of Whirlpool spreading its weight across three rows rather than one: any record whose top row absorbs 46% has less left over for everything below it. That is arithmetic, not a claim about compressors.
What escapes that explanation is the size of the shared row. Both records put a third or more of themselves into the ice maker, and Samsung does so while also being nine times larger. Where the two are indistinguishable#
Four rows are marked as noise or as no measured difference: the condenser at 1% on both, eighteen Samsung filings against two; the motor at 1% against 2%, 23 against four; the water valve or line at 1% against 2%, eighteen against three; and the heating element at 0% against 1%, two against one.
In three of those four the Whirlpool share is the higher one while resting on a small fraction of the reports. Rows like that are the clearest reason to publish counts beside shares — four reports out of 170 will outrank 23 out of 1,556 as a percentage, and that ordering describes the denominators rather than the appliances.
What each column is for#
Samsung's column answers, in detail, how a very large complaint record distributes itself: one dominant component and then a well-measured cluster of four. Whirlpool's answers, more coarsely, that its complaints concentrate on three components — the ice maker, the compressor and the wiring — which hold 106 of its 170 filings between them.
Both answers are about complaints. Neither record contains the number of refrigerators behind it, and that missing denominator is the same size problem whether a record holds 170 reports or 1,556.
Reading the pair together#
The ice maker is the first stop on either brand, emphatically. The second stop differs: the compressor on a Whirlpool, and on a Samsung a cluster of the control board, the compressor and the evaporator with little between them.
