Why SmartThings cannot see it#

Pairing briefly moves your phone onto the [dishwasher](/blog/repair-or-replace-dishwasher)'s own network, and several things break that silently:

• Phone on 5 GHz. The dishwasher's setup network is 2.4 GHz. If your phone is locked to 5 GHz, the hand-off can fail on some Android phones — put the phone on a 2.4 GHz network first.
• Location Services off. Android needs Location permission to scan Wi-Fi during pairing (a Google rule, not Samsung's). Turn it on for setup.
• Pairing timed out. The dishwasher leaves pairing mode after five minutes. Re-enter it on DW80R/DW80B models by holding Sanitize + Dry together for three seconds until the Wi-Fi LED flashes fast.
• Old SmartThings app. Newer dishwashers need a current app — update it before trying again.
• Module not broadcasting. If the LED never flashes on the button combo, the Wi-Fi module (DD82-01139B on DW80R) may have failed; because Samsung integrates it into the main board, that becomes a board-level repair.

Pairing procedure (DW80R/DW80B)#

1. In SmartThings: + > Add Device > Samsung > Dishwasher.
2. On the dishwasher: hold Sanitize + Dry for three seconds until the Wi-Fi LED flashes.
3. Let SmartThings scan (give it 30-60 seconds).
4. Pick your home Wi-Fi and enter the password.
5. Wait for "Device added." If it finds the dishwasher but stalls at "connecting to Wi-Fi," confirm a 2.4 GHz network, WPA2 security, and no MAC filtering or AP isolation.

Setup issue vs. module failure#

The tell is the LED. If it flashes in pairing mode but the app cannot find it, the cause is phone-side — band, Location, app version, or a timeout — and no parts are needed. If the LED does not flash at all on the Sanitize + Dry combo, the module is not broadcasting and the hardware has failed.

What NoApp is not#

It is not a wash-cycle error and not a sign the dishwasher is broken — it strictly concerns the initial SmartThings pairing. If the machine cleans fine but will not connect, you are looking at setup, not repair, unless the Wi-Fi LED refuses to flash at all.

Set yourself up to succeed#

Put the phone on 2.4 GHz and enable Location Services before you open SmartThings, and start the add-device flow first so the app is ready the moment the five-minute pairing window opens. Keep SmartThings updated so it recognizes the newest models, and stand near the dishwasher during pairing so the phone-to-appliance hand-off holds.

Start the app before the appliance#

Order matters more than most people expect. If you spend a few minutes configuring SmartThings and only then walk over to press Sanitize + Dry, the pairing window may already be counting down — or you may miss it entirely. Open SmartThings, begin the Add Device flow for the dishwasher, and only put the dishwasher into pairing mode once the app is actively scanning. That way the flashing Wi-Fi LED and the app's search overlap, which is when pairing actually succeeds.

If it still will not connect#

When the LED flashes and the phone is correctly on 2.4 GHz with Location on, and it still fails, work the router: confirm the network is genuinely 2.4 GHz (not a band-steered single name that hides the 2.4 GHz radio), turn off AP isolation and MAC filtering for setup, and move the phone and dishwasher close to the router during pairing. A guest network or a mesh node handing off mid-pairing is a common silent blocker. Once paired, the dishwasher holds the connection on its own.
