Most Likely Cause#
When a Samsung oven won't begin a self-clean, the board is almost always waiting on one confirmation it never receives: the motorized door lock reporting fully locked. Self-clean drives the cavity past 900°F, and Samsung's control board will not start that heat until the lock position switch says the door is latched and safe. So the number-one reason self-clean "won't start" is a door-lock motor or its position switch — not the heating system at all.
That single design fact reframes the whole repair. Instead of chasing elements and sensors, you start at the lock and work outward.
Model Identification#
The series sets the internals. NE-prefix units are freestanding electric with a hidden bake element under the floor panel; NX-prefix units are slide-in gas or electric, often with the Flex Duo divider; Flex Duo models split the cavity into two zones and so add a second lock and sensor set. The model label is inside the door frame. Knowing the series tells you whether you have one lock to check or, on a Flex Duo, potentially two.

Working the Causes#
Door lock motor. Start Self Clean and listen. If the lock motor hums and moves but the cycle never arms, the lock is not driving fully home or the position switch isn't confirming. The motorized latch has to satisfy the board both mechanically and electrically before it will commit to 900°F; a worn motor, a bent latch, or a dirty micro-switch stops it there. This is where the majority of "self-clean won't start" jobs end.
Door switch. Separate from the self-clean latch, the ordinary door switch tells the board whether the door is open. If it sticks in the open position, the board thinks the door is ajar and won't even attempt to lock. Press the plunger by hand — if the oven then behaves, the switch is stuck or out of adjustment.
Temperature sensor. Samsung's thermistor probe reads cavity temperature from the rear wall. If it reads open or shorted, the board throws SE or SE1 and refuses to run any heated mode, self-clean included, because it can no longer trust the temperature it's about to push to extremes. An open-circuit reading on the sensor connector at the back of the oven confirms it. A sensor that has merely drifted, by contrast, throws no code — the oven runs but the temperature is quietly wrong.
Latched faults and the board. Sometimes an earlier error is still latched and blocking every mode; on Wi-Fi units, SmartThings shows codes even after the panel has cleared them, and a five-minute power-off often clears a soft lockout. If the lock, switch, and sensor all check out and self-clean still won't arm, the control board's relay or logic is the remaining suspect.

One Cause That Fakes All the Others#
Before you replace anything, rule out a latched prior fault. If the oven threw an error on an earlier cook — a sensor glitch, an over-temperature trip, a momentary lock fault — that code can stay latched and quietly block every heated mode, self-clean included, even after the panel looks normal again. A full five-minute power-off at the breaker clears most soft lockouts, and on Wi-Fi units SmartThings will show you the stored code the front panel already wiped. It is the cheapest thing to try, it takes minutes, and it resolves a surprising share of "won't start" calls with no parts at all.

Diagnostic Sequence#
- Start Self Clean and listen for the lock motor — buzzing without confirmation points at the lock.
- Press the door switch by hand to rule out a stuck "door open" reading.
- Check SmartThings (or the panel) for SE / SE1 or any latched code.
- Power off for five minutes to clear a soft lockout, then retry.
- Still refusing with lock, switch, and sensor good: suspect the control board.
Replacing the Door-Lock Assembly#
When the lock motor is the confirmed fault, the assembly lives above the cavity behind the control panel:
- Disconnect power at the breaker — an electric Samsung oven is on a live 240V circuit.
- Remove the top panel or rear access cover to reach the lock motor and its position switch above the door.
- Photograph the wiring, then unplug the lock motor and switch connectors.
- Unbolt the lock assembly, fit the replacement, and reconnect exactly as photographed.
- Restore power and start Self Clean; the latch should drive home and the board should arm the cycle.

Testing the Temperature Sensor#
If the board is throwing SE or SE1, verify the thermistor before assuming the board is bad. Unplug the oven, reach the sensor connector at the rear wall where the probe passes through, and check resistance across the two sensor leads with a meter. An open or wildly out-of-range reading condemns the sensor; a plausible reading points back at the wiring or the board. Replacing the probe is a rear-panel job and clears the SE lockout that blocks self-clean.
Recalibrating a Drifted Sensor#
A sensor that reads the wrong temperature without an error code can often be trimmed rather than replaced. Samsung ovens hold a calibration offset in the control panel — press and hold Bake until the current offset appears, adjust it with the temperature keys, and save. Use this only for small drift; if you need more than the panel's roughly +/- 35°F range to get correct temperatures, the sensor is failing and should be replaced, not compensated. A badly drifted sensor is also a reason the board may refuse a high-heat mode.
