2. Thermal Cutoff Opening Early (often a failed cooling fan)#
A thermal cutoff protects the magnetron and cavity from overheating by cutting power when temperature climbs too high. Normally it only trips after long or repeated use, but a cutoff that has weakened, or a magnetron cooling fan that has failed or is choked with grease and dust, lets heat spike fast — so the cutoff opens just seconds into a cycle and shuts the unit down. Listen for the cooling fan when you start the microwave; if it is silent or weak, inadequate cooling is likely tripping the cutoff early. A blocked grease filter or a clogged vent on an over-the-range model has the same effect.
3. Control-Board Relay Dropping Out#
The control board energizes a relay to power the high-voltage circuit, and if that relay's contacts are worn or the board is failing, it can close at start and then drop out a moment later, ending the cycle. This often comes with other electronic quirks — a flickering display, an unresponsive button, or the fault landing at slightly different points each time. Over-the-range Samsung models are especially exposed because cooktop steam rises directly onto the control panel and board, corroding traces over time.
4. Sensor Cook Ending the Cycle Early#
If the shut-off only happens on Sensor Cook or auto cycles and never on straight time-and-power cooking, suspect the humidity sensor rather than the safety chain. Samsung's Sensor Cook reads steam in the cavity to judge doneness, and when the sensor is coated with grease film it can misread the cavity as already cooked and end the cycle almost immediately. The fix is usually cleaning rather than a part: clean the interior thoroughly, paying attention to the upper walls and ceiling where the sensor sits, and if it still ends cycles early, the humidity sensor has failed.
5. Arcing Forcing a Shutdown#
Samsung's Ceramic Enamel cavity resists staining, but if it is chipped down to bare metal, or if the waveguide cover has carbonized food splatter on it, the resulting arc can trip the unit into a protective shutdown seconds into a cycle. A failing magnetron or high-voltage diode produces a microwave that runs its entire cycle normally — turntable turning, light on, timer counting — but never heats the food. That is a no-heat symptom, not a shut-off symptom. If your microwave actually stops within seconds, spend your time on the door interlocks, cooling and thermal cutoff, and control relay rather than on the magnetron.
