Runs but doesn't heat: what that tells you#
A microwave that lights up, spins the turntable, and counts down but never warms the food is telling you something specific: the control side is fine, and the failure is in the high-voltage power-generation side that energizes the magnetron. That narrows the search to a handful of components, and it also raises the safety stakes, because those parts sit behind the cabinet where lethal voltage lingers.

Samsung microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that stores roughly 2,100 volts of direct current — enough to be lethal — and it can hold that charge for hours or even days after the unit is unplugged. Any repair reaching behind the outer cabinet (the magnetron, capacitor, diode, transformer, or high-voltage wiring) requires a professional with the proper discharge tools. Working through the causes#
Door interlock switches (most common). Samsung microwaves use three or four door switches wired in series, and every one must register "door properly closed" before the magnetron is allowed to energize. Small plastic actuator buttons, pushed by hooks on the door, work these switches, and they are rated for tens of millions of cycles — around 5 to 10 years of average use — before they wear out. When one switch stops registering, the microwave may run without heating or refuse to start at all. This is the most common and least expensive cause, but the switches sit at the edge of the high-voltage area, so testing is a technician's job.
Magnetron failure (common). The magnetron is the tube that actually generates the microwaves. When it fails, the unit runs normally but produces no heat, often with a loud hum or buzz as it tries and cannot. A failed magnetron is the classic "everything works but the food is cold" cause, and it is replaced as a high-voltage component.
High-voltage diode (occasional). The diode helps convert the transformer's output into the voltage the magnetron needs. A failed diode breaks that conversion, so the magnetron never gets enough voltage to fire and the food stays cold. It sometimes hums or trips on the attempt, and it is diagnosed and replaced professionally.
High-voltage capacitor (occasional). The capacitor works with the diode and transformer to build the magnetron's operating voltage, and a failed capacitor stops heat production. This is the same part that stores the lethal charge described above, so it is strictly professional service — never a DIY test.
Thermal fuse or cutout (occasional). A thermal fuse or cavity cutout cuts power to the heating circuit if the unit overheats, and once it opens the microwave runs without heating. It is tested and replaced as part of a professional diagnosis, along with a check of why it tripped.
