Working through each cause#
1. Interior drum-surface rust (most common)#
It starts when a paint chip from impact exposes bare steel; moisture from the next damp load oxidizes it, and the rust creeps under the surrounding paint until larger flakes lift. Catch it early — sand the spot back to clean metal before the rust undermines more paint. Once flakes are transferring to clothes, the drum finish is the problem to address.
2. Rear drum bearing corrosion (common)#
Moisture migrating through the exhaust system condenses on the cooler rear bearing surface and corrodes it, producing squealing or grinding, metal particles, or black marks on light fabrics. This is a mechanical repair, not a cosmetic one — a corroded bearing has to be replaced before it damages the drum or shaft. The squeal that rises with the drum is the tell.
3. Moisture sensor bar corrosion (occasional)#
The stainless moisture-sensor bars can corrode from fabric-softener residue, bleach, or mineral-heavy water, and corroded bars send false readings so cycles end too early or never end. Clean the bars with isopropyl alcohol and 220-grit sandpaper. If the bars are visibly pitted, replace the sensor assembly rather than trying to polish them.
4. Exhaust vent connection rust (occasional)#
The thin-gauge exhaust port rusts from condensation backflow, and if it rusts through, exhaust air and lint escape into the laundry room — a health hazard on gas models and a fire risk on any dryer. Sand and repaint surface rust; if there are holes, replace the rear panel. Switching to a rigid metal exhaust duct reduces the condensation that drives this.
5. Exterior cabinet rust (less common)#
Humidity attacks the paint at seams, screw holes, and edges, leaving surface rust that's mostly cosmetic. Sand it, apply a rust converter, prime, and repaint, then wax the exterior annually to slow it. In a damp laundry room this is maintenance more than repair.
