Midea Refrigerator Leaking Water? Causes & Fix

Read the leak by location#

The spot where water appears narrows the cause immediately:

• Under the crisper drawers, inside: a clogged defrost drain backing up.
• At the rear of the unit: a cracked or loose water supply line feeding the ice maker.
• At the front bottom, outside: condensation running off a poor door gasket seal.

Check the location first, and you have usually already found the system at fault.

Causes at a glance#

Working through the causes#

Clogged defrost drain (40%). During auto-defrost, melted frost runs down a drain tube to a pan beneath the refrigerator, where it evaporates. When the drain hole or tube freezes shut or clogs with food debris, the water backs up and pools under the crisper drawers or spills onto the floor. On Midea models the drain hole sits at the rear bottom of the freezer compartment — clear it with warm water and flush the tube until it drains freely.

Cracked water supply line (25%). On models with an ice maker or dispenser, the supply line runs to the back of the unit and can crack or loosen at a fitting, leaving water at the rear rather than inside. Pull the refrigerator out and inspect the line and its connections along the back for drips or damage, and tighten or replace as needed.

Faulty water inlet valve (20%). The inlet valve controls water entering for the ice maker, and a valve that fails to seal or cracks can weep continuously. If water collects near the valve at the rear or underside and the supply line itself is sound, test the valve and replace it if it leaks.

Door-gasket condensation (10%). Water at the front bottom on the outside is often not a plumbing leak at all but condensation: a worn or dirty door gasket lets humid air in, and it condenses and runs down the front. Clean the gasket, check it seals evenly all around, and replace it if it is hardened or torn.

Drain pan overfilled (5%). The evaporation pan under the unit can overfill or sit askew, spilling water onto the floor. Check that the pan is seated correctly and not cracked, and confirm the drain above it is actually flowing to it.

Step by step#

1. Disconnect power at the breaker before reaching inside or behind the unit.
2. Identify where the water appears — inside under the crispers, at the rear, or at the front bottom.
3. For interior pooling, clear the freezer defrost drain with warm water.
4. For rear water, pull the fridge out and inspect the supply line and inlet valve.
5. For front-bottom water, inspect and clean the door gasket.

Preventing a repeat#

• Flush the defrost drain periodically so food debris cannot freeze it shut.
• Inspect the rear water line and fittings once a year for cracks or seepage.
• Keep the door gasket clean so it seals and does not sweat.
