Help! Maytag Washer Pumps but Does Not Spin
Most likely the lid or door lock is not confirming closed, or — on a top-loader — the shift actuator that switches the machine from agitate to spin has failed. The washer drains fine because the pump works, but it will not spin until the lock circuit and the spin drive are both good.
Why draining works but spinning does not#
Draining and spinning are separate jobs, and the fact that the pump ran already tells you a lot. Power is reaching the machine and the drain circuit works, so the fault sits specifically in the spin path. On Maytag MVW top-loaders that path runs through the shift actuator (the "splutch"), which mechanically engages the basket for spin. On MHW front-loaders it runs through the door lock, the drive belt, and the motor. A washer will also refuse to spin if the control never sees the lid or door lock confirm closed, which is why the lock circuit is always worth checking before you condemn the drive. Working the fault in that order — lock, then actuator or belt, then motor — keeps you from replacing an expensive part that was never the problem.

Check it yourself, in order#
- Disconnect power at the outlet or breaker before opening anything, and keep towels ready for water trapped in the boot on a front-load.
- On a top-load MVW, let the lid lock disengage on its own; do not force it.
- Watch a drain-and-spin cycle: if the machine drains then stops dead, suspect the lid or door lock first.
- Enter diagnostic mode with the tech-sheet 3-button sequence and read stored codes — F5E2 for the lock, F7E1 for the motor, F1E1 or F1E2 for the board.
- On a top-loader, tilt the machine and inspect the shift actuator underneath; it is held by a few screws and is the most common no-spin part.
- On a front-loader, check the drive belt for wear and confirm the door lock latches; the valve and motor covers use T20 Torx screws.
