Help! Maytag Washer No Hot or Cold Water
Most likely the hot and cold inlet valves are blocked or failed — clogged inlet screens, a partly closed supply valve, or a worn valve diaphragm. On Maytag MHW front-load and MVW top-load washers the water temperature is set by how long each valve stays open, so a fill fault shows up as "no hot or cold water."
Where Maytag differs from a plain Whirlpool#
Maytag MHW and MVW washers ride on the Whirlpool platform and share its F-code system and 3-button diagnostic entry, but they carry heavier-duty parts and a 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and stainless steel wash drum. For a water-temperature complaint, three things matter: the inlet valves, the supply plumbing feeding them, and the control-board logic that meters how long each valve opens.
Because temperature on an HE washer is mixed by timing rather than a thermostat, a single sticking valve can starve one temperature while the other still fills. That is why the symptom often reads as "cold-only" or "hot-only" rather than a complete no-fill.
Causes ranked by likelihood#
| Likely cause | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Clogged inlet valve screens — most likely | Slow or absent fill on one or both temperatures | Remove the supply hoses at the back and clean the mesh screens inside the valve inlets. Hard-water scale is the usual culprit. |
| Closed or kinked supply | No fill at all on the affected temperature | Open both hot and cold shutoff valves fully and straighten any kinked hose. |
| Failed inlet valve diaphragm | Slow fill even with clean screens and good pressure | Replace the inlet valve assembly; the internal diaphragm is not serviceable. |
| Control-board metering fault (F1E1, F1E2) | An F1E1 or F1E2 code is stored; temperatures are swapped or missing | Do a hard reset first, then replace the board if the code returns. |
| Water-supply / drain flag (F8E1) | F8E1 stored during the fill step | Confirm supply pressure and that the drain hose is not siphoning water back out. |

Check it yourself, in order#
- Disconnect power at the outlet or breaker before any inspection, and close both the hot and cold supply valves.
- On a front-load MHW, expect trapped water in the boot seal — keep towels ready when you open the door after a failed cycle. On a top-load MVW, let the lid lock disengage on its own; do not force the lid.
- Remove the supply hoses at the back and inspect the inlet-valve screens. Scaled mesh restricts flow — clean it thoroughly.
- Confirm both supply valves are fully open and both hoses are free of kinks and good pressure is present.
- Enter diagnostic mode with the tech-sheet 3-button sequence and read stored codes: F5E2 is the door or lid lock, F7E1 the motor, and F8E1 a water-supply or drain flag.
- If you replace the valve, the body is held by T20 Torx screws behind the rear panel.
Prevent the repeat#
In hard-water areas the inlet screens scale up fastest, so clean them once a year rather than waiting for a slow-fill complaint. Leaving the supply valves fully open, using only HE detergent, and wiping the front-load door boot monthly all reduce the fill and drain faults that put a Maytag on the bench.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair or replace?#
A no-water fault is almost always a clean-or-replace-the-valve repair, not a dead machine — and if the drive motor is ever implicated, check the 10-year parts warranty before paying for anything. A professional diagnosis confirms whether you are looking at a screen, a valve, or the board. Book a repair for an upfront quote before any work begins.
