The likely culprit#
Most likely: a water inlet valve that isn't opening fully. The valve's solenoid-operated gates can fail to open, or a calcified diaphragm can throttle the flow to a trickle even when energized. If the valve is good, the mesh inlet screens in front of it are the next thing to check.

Working through each cause#
1. Water inlet valve not opening (28% of cases)#
The inlet valve uses solenoid-operated gates for hot and cold, and when a solenoid fails that side stops flowing, while a diaphragm calcified by hard water throttles flow even with the solenoid energized. The tell is no fill, or a weak trickle on one temperature. With power and water off, check the valve for continuity at the solenoids and inspect the diaphragm for scale before replacing it.
2. Clogged inlet screens (18% of cases)#
Every Maytag inlet valve has small mesh screens at the hose ports to catch sediment and scale, and in hard water they pack solid and choke the fill to a trickle. Shut the supplies, unthread the hoses, and pull or brush the screens clean. Replace crushed or corroded screens rather than forcing debris through into the valve.
3. Low pressure or a part-closed supply valve (15% of cases)#
The inlet valve needs adequate water pressure to open its diaphragm fully, so a partly-closed supply valve behind the washer or low house pressure shows up as a weak fill. Open both supply valves fully — old gate valves can seize part-open even when the handle looks open — and test a nearby faucet to rule out a house-pressure problem. Swapping a stiff gate valve for a quarter-turn ball valve makes the state obvious.
4. Water-level sensor reads full early (12% of cases)#
Maytag washers meter fill with an analog pressure sensor, and if it drifts or its sensing hose is blocked it can report the tub as full before it is, cutting the fill short. Compare the actual level to when filling stops; a fill that quits well below normal points at the sensor or its air-dome hose. This is often confirmed in the washer's diagnostic mode via the model-specific 3-button sequence.
5. Kinked or restricted supply hose (7% of cases)#
A rubber hose kinks when the washer is pushed back against the wall, and even braided lines can be pinched under the machine's weight, throttling the fill like a partly-closed valve. Pull the washer forward and inspect both hoses end to end. Replace any kinked rubber hose with a braided stainless one.
6. Control board or Extra Power fill circuit (5% of cases)#
If the valve, screens, pressure, and sensor all check out, the control board may not be energizing the fill valve — sometimes with an F8E1 fill-fault code. The Extra Power circuit is unique to Maytag, so a fault there can affect fill behavior on cycles where it's engaged. Confirm the valve is getting no signal before condemning the board.
