Help! Maytag Dryer Temperature Not Right

Where Maytag dryers can go wrong on heat#

Nearly all of these failures trace back to airflow. A lint-clogged vent makes the dryer run hot, trips the high-limit and thermal fuse, and can leave it either too hot or completely cool depending on which protective device reacts. That is why clearing the vent is step one on almost every temperature call.

- Unplug the dryer, or shut off gas and power, before removing any panel; the electric supply is 240V and the controls run on 120V.
- Clean the lint filter and the full exhaust vent first — restricted airflow causes most temperature faults.
- Test the thermal fuse on the exhaust housing behind the rear panel; it is the most common no-heat failure.
- Test the heating element or, on a gas model, the igniter and flame sensor for a no-heat condition.
- Check the cycling thermostat if heat is present but the temperature is wrong.
- Wipe the moisture-sensor bars clean if cycles end too early or run far too long.
Prevent the repeat#
Cleaning the lint filter every load and having the vent duct cleaned once a year prevents the airflow restriction behind most temperature faults, including the tripped thermal fuse. Confirming the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer runs keeps heat and moisture moving out instead of backing up into the cabinet. Because the four-bar moisture sensor decides when to stop, wiping those bars clean of fabric-softener film now and then also keeps auto-dry cycles ending at the right dryness instead of too early or too late.

A thermal fuse, thermostat, or heating element is an inexpensive part, so a temperature fault rarely justifies a new dryer — and if the drive motor is ever implicated, the 10-year parts warranty may cover it.
