The drain system on LG front-loaders follows a three-stage path: tub sump collects water, a short rubber hose routes it to the pump filter housing, and the drain pump (EAU62043401) pushes water through the external hose to your standpipe. OE triggers when water is not evacuated within 10 minutes.

Diagnosis by Sound (Saves Hours)

Put your ear near the lower-left front panel during a drain attempt:

Loud humming, no draining: Pump motor runs but impeller is jammed. Small object (coin, underwire tip) passed through the filter into the impeller chamber.

Complete silence: Pump motor is dead, wiring is broken, or the board is not sending the drain command.

Normal pump sound, water stays: Pump works fine but water has nowhere to go — external drain hose or standpipe is blocked. Or hose is routed above 96 inches (exceeds pump head pressure).

Gurgling then silence: Air lock in the pump housing. Usually from a partially collapsed sump-to-pump hose allowing air intrusion.

The Fix (By Phase)

Phase 1: Clean the Filter Trap — Solves 60%

1. Power off. Towels in front of lower-left panel
2. Remove kick panel (2 clips or screws)
3. Place shallow pan under the drain filter cap
4. Slowly turn cap counter-clockwise — water pours out
5. Once empty, remove filter. Clear debris (coins, hair ties, lint clumps)
6. Reach into impeller chamber behind the filter — spin impeller by finger, should rotate freely

A partially collapsed hose creates a puzzling OE symptom: the pump sounds normal, the filter is clean, the drain hose is correct, but water drains extremely slowly or not at all. The collapsed section acts as a flow restriction the pump cannot fully overcome.

Board-Level Drain Command

The main board energizes the drain pump via a relay or triac. In the 5% of OE cases where the pump receives no power:

• The board's drain relay may have failed (contacts welded open or burned)
• A fuse on the board may have blown (protecting the pump circuit)
• The pump connector at the board end may have corroded

Test: during a drain command, measure voltage at the pump connector (should see 120VAC). If present but pump dead: pump motor failure. If absent: board or wiring issue.

OE After the Machine Was Moved

If OE appeared immediately after moving or reinstalling the washer:

1. Check the drain hose height (may have been rerouted above 96 inches)
2. Check for kinks in the drain hose from repositioning

Water damage risk: Washer faults involving water control (fill, drain, leak detection) can escalate from a minor component failure to a major water damage event. A stuck valve or failed pump can result in flooding that damages flooring, subfloor, and lower-level ceilings.

Mold and hygiene: Standing water in the drum (from drain failures) develops mold and bacteria within 24-48 hours. This contamination transfers to subsequent loads and is difficult to eliminate once established in the door seal.
