What this LG vs Whirlpool comparison is based on#
Two federal complaint records are counted here: 192 CPSC SaferProducts incident reports naming a component on an LG refrigerator between 2011 and 2026, and 170 doing the same for a Whirlpool refrigerator across the same window. Each share is a share of its own column's total, and neither total counts refrigerators sold or in service.
The two records are within 22 filings of each other. That matters more than it sounds, because most disagreements in this material can be explained away by one record being smaller than the other. Here they cannot.
Equal sizes, unequal profiles#
The ice maker takes 34% of the Whirlpool record — 58 filings — and 13% of the LG one, 24 filings. Twenty-one points, the widest gap on the page, between two columns of nearly identical size.
The compressor adds 10 points, 19% against 9%, 32 filings against eighteen. The wiring or power cord adds 8, 9% against 1%, sixteen filings against two.
Then the control board reverses: 7% of the LG record, fourteen filings, against 2% of the Whirlpool one, four filings. Five points, running the other way.
Four differences on comparable denominators, three one way and one the other. This is the most substantive disagreement between two evenly matched records anywhere in this comparison set.
Why equal sizes change the reading#
On most pages here, a set of same-direction gaps invites a simple explanation: one record's complaints named components more often, so all its named rows rose together. That explanation is much weaker when the two records are the same size and one of them still has a row running the other way.
Whirlpool's top three rows hold 106 of its 170 filings. LG's top three hold 56 of 192. So Whirlpool's record is more concentrated, and part of the three same-direction gaps is that concentration. But the control board gap cannot come from concentration — a more concentrated record would lead there too, and it does not.
The conclusion is bounded but real: at least one component genuinely separates these two records, and it is the control board, where LG's fourteen filings sit against Whirlpool's four.
The two column shapes#
Whirlpool's column is short and steep: the ice maker at 34%, the compressor at 19%, the wiring or power cord at 9%, and then nothing above 2%. Three components carry most of it.
LG's is longer and gentler: the ice maker at 13%, the compressor at 9%, the control board at 7%, the water valve or line at 3%, the motor at 2%, and a tail that continues through the thermostat, the wiring and the condenser. Five components with weight, and a fourth-place row of six filings where Whirlpool's fourth place is four.
Both are usable, and they suit different questions. Whirlpool's answers "what is the most likely subject of a complaint" with more confidence; LG's answers "what else might it be" with more depth.
Where nothing separates them#
Three rows show no measured difference: the condenser at 1% on both, one filing against two; the motor at 2% on both, three against four; and the thermostat or sensor at 1% on both, two against one. The water valve or line differs by a point in LG's direction, six filings against three, and is marked as noise.
As on most pages here, the exact agreements sit on the rows neither record mentions much. A row of one to four filings has very little room to differ, so matching there is a fact about size rather than evidence about the appliances.
The wiring row deserves its own look#
Of the three gaps leaning Whirlpool, the wiring or power cord is the one that behaves least like a concentration effect. Sixteen Whirlpool filings against two LG ones is an eightfold difference in counts on denominators that differ by an eighth, and unlike the ice maker and the compressor it is not one of the components a refrigerator complaint record usually converges on.
Two readings are available and this page cannot choose between them. A wiring or power cord row is where reports about heat, scorching and electrical smell tend to land, so a record with more safety-flavoured submissions will show a larger one. Alternatively the difference is about the appliances. The corpus behind both columns is weighted towards safety events in the first place, which makes the first reading the more economical one, but nothing here settles it.
What can be said is that the wiring gap and the control board gap point in opposite directions on components that sit next to each other electrically, which is a further reason to treat this pair as genuinely differing rather than as one record being uniformly louder than the other.
The tails#
LG's column ends with a drain pump or hose at 1%, one filing. Whirlpool's ends with an evaporator and a heating element at 1%, one filing each. Single-report rows mark the edge of the classification, not the machine.
Reading the pair together#
Both records point a technician at the ice maker first and the compressor second. The genuine divergence is what comes third: the wiring on a Whirlpool, the control board on an LG. That divergence, on records of 192 and 170 filings, is the part of this comparison least likely to be an artefact of how the two sets of reports were written.
