LG ThinQ Update Failed
An LG ThinQ update that sits on "available" forever or dies partway through almost always finished downloading but never got a clean install window. Force the install with a power cycle, give LG's cloud a full day to re-queue a failed attempt, and — if it fails twice — factory-reset the Wi-Fi module and re-pair so the…
How LG pushes firmware#
LG does not give you an "Update Now" button. The ThinQ cloud pushes firmware to your specific model automatically; the appliance downloads it while idle and installs it during the next power-on sequence or overnight. You can see the state but not force the download: ThinQ > device > 3-dot menu > About Appliance > SW Version. So "SW Update Available" that never clears usually means the download is done but the install step simply has not run yet.
Why "Update Failed" appears#
This error means the install was interrupted, not that the file is corrupt. The usual triggers are a power blip during the short overnight install window, a Wi-Fi drop mid-download, or — on a handful of older units with very little onboard flash — not enough room to stage the update. None of these are the app's fault, and none require a service call on their own.

The recovery sequence#
1. Force the pending install. Unplug the appliance for five minutes, then plug it back in. A queued update installs during that power-on sequence.
2. Wait a full day. After a failed attempt, LG's cloud re-queues the update on its own. Do not hammer it manually — give it a day before trying again, because repeated manual retries collide with the cloud's own retry.
3. Reset the Wi-Fi module and re-pair. If it fails a second time, hold POWER for ten seconds to factory-reset the module, then re-pair with ThinQ. That wipes a corrupted partial download and forces a clean re-download from scratch.
Step by step, start to finish#
- Confirm the current version. ThinQ > device > 3-dot menu > About Appliance > SW Version. Note it so you can tell later whether the update actually landed.
- Check the Wi-Fi link. A weak or dropping signal at the appliance is the most common reason a download never completes; confirm the device shows Connected and sits on your 2.4 GHz band.
- Power-cycle to trigger the install. Unplug five minutes, replug, and let the power-on sequence run any pending install.
- Leave it alone for a day. LG re-queues failed updates automatically, so manual retries inside that window just get in the way.
- Reset and re-pair. Hold POWER ten seconds, re-add the appliance in ThinQ, and let it download fresh.

When it stops being a software problem#
If the appliance goes unresponsive after an update — blank display, dead buttons, or garbled characters — the main control board's firmware may be corrupted rather than merely un-updated. An LG technician can reflash that board over a serial service connection using LG's proprietary tool; an owner cannot. If the board hardware itself has failed rather than just its firmware, it needs replacement, not a reflash. The tell is simple: a unit that runs normally but will not update is a software issue, while one that will not power up correctly is a hardware one.
