Whirlpool is typically cheaper per repair, and the reason is boring but decisive: its parts are everywhere, and its diagnostics need nothing special.
Three codes cover most LG calls#
OE is a drain failure. Clean the filter behind the lower front panel first — that is the fix more often than not. If the filter is clear, look for a kinked drain hose, then a failed drain pump motor.
LE points at the direct-drive motor itself: a shorted winding, a demagnetised rotor, or a dead hall sensor. Diagnosis means measuring stator winding resistance and checking the hall sensor connector for corrosion, so it is a proper diagnostic job rather than a parts swap. UE is the unbalanced load code, and while one UE on a duvet is normal, repeated UE errors on ordinary loads mean worn shock absorbers, a tired suspension spring, or bearing wear starting.
Two non-code complaints round out the brand. Door boot mould grows in the folds of the rubber where moisture sits — clean it with baking soda or bleach and leave the door ajar between washes. And the spider arm, the aluminium alloy casting joining drum to bearing shaft, corrodes from moisture, detergent residue and galvanic reaction with the stainless drum until advanced corrosion cracks it during spin.

Whirlpool asks for cheaper parts, more often#
Cabrio bearings sit at the bottom of the outer tub in that vertical-axis design and support the inner basket during spin; when they fail you get loud rumbling that is impossible to ignore.
Motor couplings are normal end-of-life wear — two plastic drive forks joined by a rubber insert — and among the cheapest repairs on the machine. Control lock is a feature, not a fault, until it sticks and leaves the washer looking unresponsive; unplugging for a minute usually clears it. Agitator dogs are small cam-shaped couplers that ratchet the upper agitator in one direction, and once they wear smooth the agitator spins freely without moving clothes — pennies to buy and a common DIY fix. Drain pumps clog on coins, buttons, hair ties and bra underwires, humming without moving water; if it keeps happening, suspect a damaged coin trap.
The verdict#
LG for the front-loader, Whirlpool direct-drive for the top-loader with an agitator. If low running cost matters more than technology, Whirlpool is cheaper to keep going in every configuration.
