What tD-05 means#

LG's direct-drive washers sense motor current precisely. The ThinQ cloud watches current at each spin speed (400, 800, and 1200 RPM) against the washer's first-30-day baseline, and tD-05 triggers when current at any speed consistently runs more than 15% over baseline — the classic sign of extra friction from worn bearings. The value of the alert is timing: it catches the electrical signature months before you would hear grinding or feel vibration, so you fix it on your schedule instead of mid-cycle with a soaked load.

Smart feature or hardware?#

The smart system is working perfectly — it is the mechanical bearing that is wearing. Nothing about the motor, inverter board, or Wi-Fi module is failing; they are correctly detecting and reporting a real hardware trend.

Diagnosis after tD-05#

1. Listen during spin. Run an empty Rinse & Spin and listen at full speed for grinding, rumbling, or a rhythmic metallic note. A smooth, quiet spin means tD-05 caught very early wear not yet audible.
2. Check drum play. Unplugged, push the drum up and down. A healthy drum barely moves (about 1-2mm); if it lifts 5mm or more, or feels gritty, the bearings are significantly worn.
3. Look for leaks or rust. Worn bearings eventually let the shaft seal leak — rusty water or brown staining under the washer means the seal has failed alongside the bearings, and both get replaced together.

Planning the repair#

If you get tD-05, treat it as real and run the checks above rather than dismissing it; the algorithm is deliberately conservative to avoid crying wolf, which means when it does fire, the wear trend is usually genuine.

Prevent premature bearing wear#

Do not overload the drum; consistent overloading puts excess radial force on the bearings. Level the washer so spin loads are even, and do not lean on or sit on the door. With normal use, bearings typically last 6-10 years. The washer keeps running after tD-05, though cycles may stretch slightly as the motor works harder against the friction — get the repair done before louder grinding, a visibly wobbling drum, or rust-tinted water appears, because once the seal starts leaking the job grows to include any water or rust damage it causes.
