What the code means
The documented reading of F4 is a fault in the oven cavity control or its associated wiring. The oven should not be used until the code clears and stays clear; if it returns after a reset, the fault is real and needs live testing behind the control panel.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F4 | There may be a problem with the Oven Cavity Control, or the associated wiring. |
What you observe
- The code is intermittent — Days can pass without it, then it returns during an ordinary cook.
- The display flickers, dims or blanks — A control, or the supply feeding it, that is struggling often shows on the display first.
- NEAR MISS: wrong temperature with no code — Without a code, calibration or the temperature sensor is the likelier subject, and the checks differ.
What triggers the code, in likelihood order
- A connector that has worked loose — Ranked first when F4 comes and goes with no link to heat: an intermittent signal is the signature of a connection, not of a dead control.
- A disturbed supply that left the control in a fault state — Outages, brownouts and breaker trips can leave an electronic control holding a fault it no longer has. It is the only cause a power cycle fixes.
- Wiring damaged by heat or chafing — Harness runs near the cavity or along a sheet-metal edge can harden, crack or rub through, opening the circuit only at certain temperatures.
What to check first, and why
- Pin down the timing — Whether the code arrives at power-up, mid-cook or late in a long bake is the cheapest diagnostic there is.
- Reset once and observe — A single clean power cycle shows whether the fault is latched or live; a code that returns at once is live.
- Check the vents and the cooling fan — With the oven on, the vents around the control should be clear and, on ovens that have one, the cooling fan should be audible.
Reset and owner-safe checks
- Record the pattern — Write down each appearance of the code with the function in use. Two or three entries usually show a pattern.
Tools: notebook or phoneAbout 5 min
- Clear the code at the breaker — Breaker off, a few minutes, breaker on. The display may ask for the time of day; that is expected after a reset.
About 5 min
- Stop before any panel comes off — Everything past this point needs live measurements or a panel removed; that is the line between an owner check and a service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The control sits close to oven heat and live wiring; scorched trim or a smell of hot plastic means leaving the oven off at the breaker until it is inspected.
When it is a service call
Call for service if F4 returns after a clean power cycle, if it comes with a burning smell or discolored trim, or if the oven heats when nothing is set. Those mean the fault is live in the control circuit, and the next step is testing behind the panel with the power on, which is not owner work.

What this reading does not cover
Generalized information: F4 is read here for the Jenn-Air oven line as a whole, which fits Jenn-Air ovens and ranges whose code list carries F4 with this oven cavity control-and-wiring reading. It is not a reading for Jenn-Air cooktops, ventilation hoods, or any model whose documentation gives F4 another meaning. Model lines can reuse a code with another meaning, so a model-specific page, where one exists, comes first.
