What does the E0 error mean on an induction cooktop?#
E0 means the active zone cannot find a pan it can heat — either the zone is empty or the cookware sitting on it is not induction-compatible. It is a cookware message, not a fault, so it is not urgent and nothing inside the cooktop has failed. The very first thing to check is the pan itself: hold a household magnet to its base, and if the magnet does not grip firmly the pan cannot work on induction. E0 is documented on Bosch, Thermador and Siemens (BSH) platforms and on most other induction cooktops. How to clear the E0 error yourself#
Work through these cookware checks in order, because every cause of E0 lives in the pan or where it sits, not in the cooktop. First, run the magnet test: a pan that grips a magnet strongly has enough ferrous metal for the coil to drive, while glass, aluminium and most stainless-clad pans do not. Second, match the pan to the zone — a base that is smaller than the ring printed on the glass leaves too little metal in the field for the zone to register a load, so move the pan to a smaller zone or use a wider pan. Third, centre the pan fully over the zone; a pan pushed to the edge or resting on the trim sits outside the coil field. If a known induction pan of the right size, centred on the zone, still shows E0, stop swapping cookware — at that point the fault is in the pan-detection sensing or the coil, and that is a technician job rather than anything to keep testing at home.
When the E0 error needs a technician#
Almost every E0 is owner-fixable because it is a cookware and placement problem: switching to a magnetic pan, sizing it to the zone, and centring it clears the code without any tools or parts. There is no electrical hazard here, so an electrician is not involved. The only time E0 points at the appliance is when it appears with cookware you have already proven works — a heavy, flat, strongly magnetic pan, correctly sized and centred, that still will not heat on one specific zone. That pattern suggests the zone pan-detection circuit or the induction coil under that zone, which needs a technician with the service diagnostics to confirm before any board or coil is replaced.

Does pan base smaller than the zone minimum cause the E0 code on an induction cooktop?#

Can I clear the E0 error myself?#
Yes — E0 is designed to be cleared by the owner. Place a flat, magnetic, correctly sized induction pan squarely on the zone and the code disappears on its own once the cooktop senses the load. No reset sequence or tools are needed for the normal cookware cause.
Is it safe to keep cooking when E0 shows?#
It is safe in the sense that E0 stops the zone from delivering power, so nothing overheats. You simply will not get any heat until a suitable pan is detected. There is no danger in leaving it on the screen, but you will not be able to cook on that zone until the cookware issue is resolved.
