Step 1 — Read the fault before opening#
Confirm the diagnosis first. Step 2 — Access the drain pump#
Remove the front lower panel (1 Phillips screw each side) to reach the drain pump and lower components at the base of the tub — for full drum access you would remove the door bellow's outer band with needle-nose pliers on the spring clip and then the front panel (4-6 Torx T20 screws), but for the pump the lower panel is usually enough. Before disconnecting any harness, photograph each connection: Whirlpool color-codes its connectors, but colors repeat across harnesses, and one photo saves reassembly guessing.
Step 3 — Check the pump filter and impeller for a clog#
The most common cause of F9 E1 is debris in the drain pump, so inspect it before condemning the motor. Position a shallow pan and towels — residual water will come out — then open the pump filter or trap (many Whirlpool front-loaders have a coin trap behind a lower access flap) and clear coins, hairpins, lint balls, and small garments. Reach the impeller and spin it with a finger: it should turn freely, and a jam here (a coin wedged in the blades) causes the pump to hum without pumping and triggers the drain timeout.

If the filter and impeller are clear but the pump still will not run, meter it. Disconnect the pump harness (press the locking tab, pull straight back, never the wires) and read the pump motor resistance against the tech-sheet spec — an open reading means a burned-out winding. Also check the drain hose from the pump to the standpipe for a kink or a clog, and confirm it is not pushed too far into the standpipe.
Step 5 — Replace the drain pump (if it tests bad)#
If the pump is confirmed failed, disconnect its inlet and outlet hoses (towels and pan ready for water) and remove the mounting screws or clips holding it — note their positions. Fit the new WPW10730972 in the exact orientation of the original, secure the hardware first, reconnect the hoses so the spring clamps seat in the barb grooves, and reconnect the harness until the locking tab clicks. A partially seated connector is the most common cause of an immediate post-repair failure and can damage control boards.

With the machine still open, plug it in briefly and use diagnostic mode to run the drain-pump test without a full cycle, confirming the pump energizes and moves water. Then unplug and reassemble.
