How to Troubleshoot Samsung Washing Machine Drain

Samsung's 5E (shown as SE on some displays) is a drain fault, and on these washers the most common cause is not a failed part at all — it is a clogged drain filter behind the lower-left access door. Read the symptom precisely before opening anything.

Step 1: Observe and document the symptom#

Note exactly what happens: a 5E or SE code, standing water after the cycle, a drain taking more than 5 minutes, or a pump running nonstop without emptying. Point the Samsung Smart Care app's camera at the code for model-specific guidance, and note when the failure hits — fill, wash, drain, or spin — to narrow the cause.

Step 2: Check the simple causes first#

Confirm the outlet has power (a Samsung washer wants a good 120-volt supply). Verify the water valves are open and the hoses unkinked, then check the lower-left drain filter: open the flap, run its small drain hose into a shallow pan, twist the filter out, and clear any lint, coins, or fabric before reseating it. Confirm the machine is level and make sure the door locks with its click-buzz-click.

Step 3: Test the drain components#

Unplug the machine and remove the lower kick panel to reach the drain pump. Listen for the pump humming during a brief powered drain, and spin the impeller by hand through the filter opening — it should turn freely. Check the impeller cavity for thread or hair wound on the shaft, a frequent cause of an intermittent 5E. While you have a meter out, a good thermal fuse reads 0 ohms and a heating element (on combo units) reads 10-20 ohms; an open reading means that part failed.

Step 4: Identify the failed component#

Samsung rarely fails multiple parts at once unless a surge hit, so multiple open readings suggest a power event — inspect the control board too. By frequency the usual culprits are a blocked drain filter, then the drain pump motor (DC31-00054A), worn shock absorbers (DC66-00470A), a deteriorated door boot seal (DC64-00802A), spider-arm corrosion (DC97-16509A), and a failed door lock (DC64-01538A).

Step 5: Verify before ordering parts#

Test any electrical part disconnected and in isolation, since a parallel component can give a false in-circuit reading. For a mechanical suspect, reproduce it — spin the drum and listen for the noise's exact source. If your findings match the Smart Care app diagnosis, order with confidence.
