Frigidaire Dryer Drum Not Turning: Causes & Fix

Unplug the dryer before anything. On gas models close the shutoff valve behind the machine, and give it 5 minutes before you touch any wiring.

Listen first, then look#

Before opening anything, run the machine briefly and take note of four things: does the motor run, does the drum turn, is there heat, and are there unusual noises. That combination usually narrows the fault to one or two parts on its own, and Frigidaire's service sheet — taped behind the toe plate — has your model's diagnostic flowchart if you want to be thorough.

Pull the dryer out from the wall and take the top panel off with its 2 rear Phillips screws, sliding it back and lifting.

The three mechanical suspects#

The belt. A snapped belt is the classic version of this fault. It is a visual diagnosis, not a meter one: look for the belt lying in the bottom of the cabinet, or wrapped loose around the drum with no tension. Nothing else produces a freely spinning motor and an immobile drum quite so completely.

The idler pulley. Its job is to hold belt tension, and when its bearing seizes the belt either burns through or simply stops driving. Spin the pulley wheel by hand: it should turn freely and quietly. Grinding or refusal to turn condemns it.

The drum rollers. These wear gradually rather than failing outright, and worn rollers add so much drag that a healthy belt slips or a healthy motor stalls. Turn the drum by hand and feel for resistance and for the roughness of a flat-spotted roller.

These three wear together, so replacing one and reusing the other two is usually a false economy — worn rollers will chew a new belt, and a tired idler will do the same.

Confirming the motor is not the problem#

If the drum will not move and the motor is silent, meter across the motor windings: 2-6 ohms is healthy. Anything open means the winding has gone, and no amount of belt work will help. Continuity elsewhere follows the same convention — near 0 ohms through safety devices and switches is good, OL means open.

Reassembly is where mistakes surface#

• New noise after the repair. A panel that is not fully seated, a misrouted belt, or a tool left inside the cabinet. Open it and look before running it again.
• The drum turns but something is intermittent. Look for a spade connector that is not fully seated, or a component that passes when cold and fails hot.
• The same fault returns. Faults on these machines cascade. Rollers, belt and idler wear at similar rates, so if you replaced only one, inspect the other two properly.

Test it properly#

Run a complete drying cycle with a small load and watch the first 10 minutes. The drum should hold a consistent speed with no thumping, you should feel heat at the exhaust, and nothing should squeal. On models with DrySense, check the automatic cycle ends at the right dryness.

A weak exhaust is worth fixing while you are here even though it is not what brought you in — restricted airflow is behind most heat-related failures and it will eventually cost you a thermal fuse.

Gas smell means leave the area and call the gas company. A tripped house breaker, several parts failed at once, or 240V work you would rather leave alone are all good reasons to book a repair.
